VOIP . . . VOIP . . . Do You Use VoIP? It has Saved our Team a Lot of Money!

Happy Sunday, from Chicago!

There seems to be a lot of controversy on the following word, but it has saved our Team about $100 a month.  Ready for the word?  Here it is -

VONAGE!

We started using this VoIP Phone Service about 18 months ago, after using a similar service, now defunct, for the previous two years.  Here's how it works, in layman's terms, since I am not a techie.

You buy a special phone adapter, or combined phone adapter/router, and connect it to your high-speed broadband (cable or DSL) connection on your computer.  You then connect a standard cordless phone to the adapter - one with multiple headsets works best - and activate the service either via toll-free number or over the internet.  It takes about a half hour for the service to become active.

Once activated, you can make unlimited local or long-distance calls, including calls to Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK, and several European Countries, for a flat monthly fee of $24.95/month - with all taxes loaded, about $35.00.  Calls to other countries are as low as one cent per minute.  A second, fax line will cost you $10/month, with the same local, national, and international calling area.

The Vonage Unlimited Home Planincludes nearly a dozen special features that the traditional telco charges big bucks for, a few bucks at a time - features like voicemail, caller id with name, three-way calling, call forwarding, and a few more.  You can also check and listen to your messages over the Internet, and change your set-up there as well, quickly.

No matter where you are, you can choose ANY area code you want, based on where your clients are.  Then, for no charge, you can forward this number, after the desired number of rings you choose, or immediately, to your core office number.

Let's say you're in South Suburban Chicago, for example, but you are dual licensed and do considerable work in NW Indiana.  Even though you reside and office in Area Code 708, you can purchase a Vonage account with Area Code 219.

Here in Chicago, this is very helpful for us - we have 7 local area codes now, 8 if you include Northwest Indiana, and, through our Team, serve the lion's share of the Chicago area.  To our national toll-free 888-770-8326 Team Line, we added our Vonage number - 773-290-8393- and immediately forwarded it to our toll-free line.  In Chicago, and the 773 Area Code for most North and South Side Neighborhood Residents - just dial the seven-digit phone number, no need to dial the area code - just like in days of old!   Seamless!

Should you move to another home in town, across the country, our internationally - just bring your Phone Adapter or Router with you - keep the same number, no matter where you are, if you'd like.  We have clients in Buenos Aries, Argentina - and call them on their Chicago Vonage Number, for a local charge, and sound quality is crystal clear.  They call us in Chicago, from Argentina, for the local Chicago rate!  No massive international calling charges!

To be sure, there are a few glitches.

If you're broadband service is down, you can't make outgoing calls.  Also, if you have DSL tied to your local phone company, you still need a landline to which your DSL Service is attached.  (Incoming Calls can be programmed to immediately forward to another cellular, voice mail, or landline number if your Internet is down, so you don't lose incoming calls).  So, we keep minimal service on one landline here, and add the DSL Service to that landline number.

You have to program 911 service to your local area manually- since there is no standard identification of your physical location with VoIP Service.

A few folks that have tried VoIP Phone Service complain about sound quality and dropped calls.  In our experience here in Chicago, however, the sound quality exceeds those of a cellular phone call by far - and no client or friend has ever complained about the sound quality of our calls.

Every once in a while, you drop a call.  In my opinion, however, far less often than cell calls are dropped.

Customer service is 24/7, but often offshore.  It takes a while to find a live human being to help you should you need support, although, during the few times I had a problem, they eventually solved it - although hold times are sometimes long.

AT & T charges have become ridiculous!  Chicago is very spread out - should I call someone more than 7 miles away from me on my landline - many suburbs, for instance - I am often hit with big toll charges at the end of the month.  Long distance charges are 10-12 cents per minute, plus taxes, depending on time of day.  Calls to Canada during business hours run over $0.70/minute plus taxes.  And, international calls - well, you'll need to draw an equity line against your home to call most overseas locations!

Simple services, like call forwarding, three-way calling, Caller ID with Name, Unlisted Service, add about $25/month to my landline bill.  Not so with VoIP!

Many of my clients run businesses using VoIP, but with a business-class commercial provider - still, usually far cheaper than the telco.  Some use Skype, but find using it for business unreliable.

Your thoughts here, please?  Have you tried, or do you use, Vonage, Skype, or another VoIP Phone Service?  Is it Good?  Bad?  Ugly?

Please share!

Dean, I've been seriously thinking of making the transition over to VOIP, but have some reservations. Mainly, my broadband cable provider. It seems the cable goes down in the most inopportune time. And like you said, no broadband - no phone service. My cable company also provides phone service now, but like the phone company the monthly charges seem to increase without notice. FIOS has also come to my area, but then again we are dealing with the phone company. Thanks for the pros and cons of Vontage, but right now I am still on the fence.

Good Post!

VoIP (Voice over IP) is cost effective.  It seems to be the current tech wave even though its been around for some time.  I am not a techie but I do moonlight for a company who specialized in VoIP Communications.

Dean, I use Vonage at home and it works great.  Our office uses regular phone but I think I might suggest it to the broker after reeading your blog.

Dean,

I have been a Vonage customer for years.

It is fantastic. With our reliance on cell phones who needs high dollar land line service anyway?

You can also get a phone FOB for your laptop and use your Vonage service sitting in a coffee shop or on the road.

People should get it and try it out and see if you like it.  You do not have to drop your current phone service to do so.

911 service is no big deal you just have to set it up.  They remind you frequently.

I also get my Vonage voice mails as email attachements...very cool.

My oldest son has Vonage it and he has no complaints.

As for myself, I subscribe to phone service through my internet provider, comparable to vonage pricing. If I want to receive faxes without having a seperate line, I paid an extra buck or two and it will have a different ring, so that I know not to pick up.

Greeting from Toledo!

Great Post!

Our Company (FloorPlanOnline) Uses Packet 8 - works great, and the emailed voice-mails make organization a breeze.

Dean, I must be technologically challenged, because I can't get my Vonyage to work.  Have had it for a year and at least I can get my message on my computer.  I do like that because besides my cell phone, I don't have a home phone that rings.  It goes into my computer and they can leave a message.  I am getting rid of my home # completly though soon, so no more vonyage.  If someone needs to get ahold of me, my cell phone number is out there everywhere.  My family doesn' t even call me on my home phone.  It is very cost effective!  You are probably using this for your business line?

Hey, Everyone -

Thanks for your comments.  Used correctly, you can save mucho bucks with Vonage!

Christina -

I use my Vonage number as my primary business outgoing line, to save money on outgoing phone calls.  I give folks my 773-290-8393 number here in Chicago, so many people only have to dial 7 digits to reach me.  Began to do this a bit over a year ago, and found many people felt more comfortable dialing this local North Side Chicago number than the ten-digit 888-770-8326 number I give to folks outside of the city, and worldwide.  (It seems those three extra digits tick people off, or make you think your hundreds of miles away, sometimes).

The 773# immediately forwards to my One Number Voice Mail System, to which my 888# is also connected.  If, during business hours, they wish to reach me right away, they hit "2", annonce themselves and hit #, and the One Number System rings my KW and Home Office, then my cell.  If they prefer, they just hit # and leave me a voice mail message - which most people do.

This way, I only have one voice mail system to check, and it is fairly reliable and quick.  Using the cell phone voice mail is very frustrating - sometimes, I don't get a flash right away on the phone I have a voice mail.   Sometimes, I don't get the message on the cell phone voice mail for several hours, and I don't want to be thought of as non-responsive.

If there is an emergency, or we're in contract negotiation, I will give out my admin (and wife), Sue's, cell phone.  If she gets a call for me, she uses our Nextel Walkie Talkie to get ahold of me right away if urgent.  I know it must be very important if she gets in touch with me this way.

Very few people have my cell number, and I only turn the ringer on if I am expecting an important call, and there is no alternative to doing so.  I turn down the ringer volume when no longer waiting for an urgent call.

I know this sounds a bit complicated, but it's a system I developed over the last 7 years or so, it works, and seems to make sense.

Talk with you soon - call or stop in anytime!

I have Vonage for my home and so far no problems at all! My phone bills with my previous provider was on the two hundred dollars every month, with Vonage I just pay 28.95 flat fee, unlimited calls nationwide! We are considering Packet 8 for our office in the near future.

Good post!

I am using another VoIP provider and so far I have not had any problems.  Actually very user friendly, at anytime, I can get my voicemail via internet or by calling my land line.  I also have an option to forward all my calls to my cell phone when I leave home.
