The Spiderwick Chronicles Today I had the pleasure of seeing this movie! Now keep in mind that this picture is rated PG and with good reason. There is some rather frightening creatures and events, including swordfighting, that may be too intense for children under say 8 years old. Now with the warning out of the way, this is an awesome movie! It transports me back to my childhood and the fantastical realms inhabited by ogres, trolls, faieries, a scary David Bowie (replaced in this movie by Nick Nolte), and great adventure! This is for the kid in all of us, and to be shared with those who actually are kids. The effects are magnificent. The story is superb; it is based on books by Tony DiTerlizzi. This magnificent writer of young adult fantasy fiction adheres to the philosophy Never Abandon Imagination! How can someone with that philosophy be anything but superbly creative! This is a MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and then buy it to add to your collection. I saw this during today's Sunday matinee and even though the theater was filled with kids, it was quiet because they were so enthralled with the movie. Truly captivating! IMHO, this is the Neverending Story, Labyrinth, and Princess Bride for a whole new generation! As an aside, while watching this movie I kept coming back to the Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book by Terry Jones (Author), Brian Froud (Illustrator), Wherefore Art? (Designer), Ruth Rowland (Drawings)...you might want to check it out too or give it as a gift to some youngster in your life who enjoyed this movie!

Danny - Glad you enjoyed it. I have noticed that sometimes people are reluctant to fork over the money for a movie if it has been marketed to a younger audience. I guess their is a misconception that adults cannot enjoy these types of films; but obviously they can!

The misses took our boys to see it and they loved it.

On a side not, Tony DiTerlizzi's art in his adaptation of the Spider and the Fly is AWESOME!!

Jim - Too bad you weren't able to accompany them as it was a fun and fantastical movie! Tony DiTerlizzi has a wonderfully imaginative mind that shines through in his work! Check out the Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book that I mention in the blog. It is a cool concept and a very well done book!

Thanks Rich, I'll have to take the kids to see it.  The movies you mentioned, The NeverEnding Story and Princess Bride, are two of my favs.  If you haven't seen it, you might want to check out The Brothers Grimm.

Jim - I think that anyone who can remember the imagination of childhood would love this movie!

Rebecca - The Neverending Story is one of my all-time favorite fantasy movies. The Brothers Grim is a little too "grim" for me, so expect something lighter but more fun.

Vincent - Even though the story centers around twin boys, the subject matter will appeal to children regardless of gender. Your girls will love it and I bet you will too! This is one to see in the theater!

Rich - I volunteer at the school library once a week, and the release of this film has had the kids getting on waiting lists reserving the books. THAT makes me happy, but I need to go see the film so I'll be able to relate to the kids on this subject better. Our 11 year old won't mind our going, either.

Karen - That is great to hear! I am an avid reader, and used to teach high school, so anything that can get kids excited and/or motivated about reading is a great thing. Reading is such a gateway to pretty much all higher processes! I am glad to hear you enjoyed the movie! I thought it was really well done!

Leesa - I know you will enjoy this movie so much! I am all about reading so it is great to hear that your son is really into the books. I think the books are very well written and definitely spur the imagination to new heights!
