This tutorial is to help you complete your Profile Page. There are (3) three sections on your Profile Page that you'll want to utilize to maximize the value and benefits of your page. The areas are "About Us", "Areas of Expertise", and "Testimonials".

It's good to have an idea of what you want your "Final" Profile page to look like when it's completed. I will breakdown the details of how all the tools and options work, but it will be up to you to be creative and decide how you want your final page to appear. Take a look at some of the samples provided in THIS POST! In my opinion, these sections are what can make your Profile Page your ULTIMATE MASTERPIECE!

THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS APPLY TO ALL THREE AREAS ON YOUR PROFILE PAGE. EACH AREA HAS THE EXACT SAME FEATURES AND TOOLS TO WORK WITH, WE'LL USE THE "ABOUT US" SECTION FOR THIS TUTORIAL POST:

  1. First, always be sure you are logged into Active Rain.

  2. If you forgot your password "CLICK HERE" for directions.

  3. Once logged in, Click on the "MY HOME" tab located at the top right corner of your screen.

  4. Now Click on (EDIT) next to the words "My Profile" on the left side of your screen.

Go to the first section which is: About Us - You can change this by clicking on [Rename Section], and then rename this portion of your page to whatever you want. For example, I changed mine from "About Us" to:

WELCOME TO YOUR NATIONAL RESOURCE FOR REAL ESTATE RELATED TECHNOLOGY & MARKETING

Here is a screen shot for reference that may help you. You might want to start with some simple text in the beginning, and then elaborate with photos, links, and HTML as time goes on. After viewing this post, hopefully you'll be feeling more comfortable with your navigational skills, and the tools that are available.

USING THE VARIOUS SECTIONS OF THE TOOL BAR:

  1. Write some text in the "About Us" box to begin. (You can always come back and change it anytime)

  2. Highlight any section of the text with your mouse.

  3. Use the B, I, U  to make your text BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINED, or any combination of all three.

  4. To Use the strike-out tool, simply highlight the text with your mouse and click on  ABC it works like this.

  5. To change text "Fonts" and "Sizes", use these tools provided:

HOW TO USE THE TEXT ALIGNMENT TOOLS:

  1. This tool will keep all your text left justified

  2. This tool will center justify all your text

  3. This tool forces all your text to be right justified

  4. This tool causes your text to expand equally across your page

USING THE TAB or INDENT TOOLS:

If you want your text or images to be indented just as this text is here, you can use the   icon. Just highlight your text or image, the click on it.  Each time you click on it...

It will TAB or indent your text evenly and consistently.

If you want your text to go back to the left and align with previous text, just use the   tool to send it back to the left justified position.

This will allow you to create some really cool text layouts

It will also allow you to fill in some of the blank space on your page.

Being a little creative is what will set you apart from the crowd.

HOW TO ADD LINKS TO TEXT OR IMAGES:

  1. Links can be created to link text and images to other pages, websites, and videos etc. in other locations.

  2. Select the text or image you want to link. For this example, I will use MAKE MILLIONS as my text.

  3. Highlight the text MAKE MILLIONS with your mouse, then select the    linking tool.  The following screen will appear:

The final result of your text will look like this: MAKE MILLIONS It works exactly the same with photos, graphics and images. Try it, click on the screen shot above and it will take you to the same location as the "Text Link" does.

TIPS: The reason I select to have linked pages open in a "new window" is that if your visitor/reader closes the window, they are right back at your post. The reason I always use a "Title", when you hold or hover your mouse over the "text link" or "image link", the "Title Text" will appear. This is a great tool for sending a subliminal message. Try it, just hover your mouse over the image above...
To remove links from text or graphics on any Page, simply click on   and that will break the link or links.

USING THE BULLET POINTS & NUMBERING:

  1. Placing your cursor next to your text, click on the Bullet  or Numbering Icon. This will place a number or a bullet point next to your line of text.
  2. To continue using Bullets & Numbers, just press "Enter" and the next Bullet or Number will be created automatically.
  • To discontinue using Bullets and Auto Numbering,
  • simply click on the  or the or   icon one more time, and toggle the option off!

HOW TO ADD PHOTOS, GRAPHICS, and PICTURES:

  1. Place your mouse cursor where you want your "Image" to be placed.
  2. Next, Click on the icon.

  3. The window below will appear.

  4. Follow these simple steps to insert/edit your images:

HOW TO MODIFY, RESIZE & ADJUST APPEARANCE OF IMAGES:

Now if you want to wrap text, and make some appearance adjustments, follow these next steps.

Follow and repeat steps 1 - 3 above. Now click on the "Appearance" tab at the top of the window.

That will take you to the screen below:

Use the options available to modify, and adjust your graphic image or photo to your desired specifications.

***NOTE: Don't worry about Class and Style at this point, they will be covered in a future post.

USING THE ADDITIONAL TOOLS PROVIDED ON THE TOOL BAR:

  1.   This tool cleans up messy HTML code on your page. This is a section we will be discussing in an upcoming post regarding HTML. Not here, and not today.

  2.   This tool allows you to use HTML code anywhere you see this icon. We will cover HTML and all the tips, tricks, and techniques in the "Using HTML on Active Rain" post coming soon...

  3.  Now you've done all this work on your page and you want to preview how it will look, just click on this icon  to get a preview opened in a new window, and decide if you like what you see. If so, and you're all
done editing, don't forget to click on

  4. The final tool and Icon I want to share is the "Spell check" tool. DO NOT take this tool for granted. Many of us are great spellers, (not me) but when you're typing/blogging out your thoughts so quickly, it's easy to make a typo. Use the "SpelChck" ... see what happens if you don't?!

Hey Brad!

I am really new to Active rain so forgive me if this is a lame question.

When I originally listed myself in active rain it was a mortgage company.  I would prefer to list myself as a loan officer.  For the life of me I can not figure out how to change this.  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks again for such great posts.

Tim - no reason your profile can't be as good or better than your website.  There is nothing your website offers that you can't include on your AR profile.  Make it you "Ultimate Webpage" with new and fresh content regularly, trust me, more and more will find you and use it as a resource.

Hi Michelle - the icons should be all better now, I had to feed them their vitamins! lol~  Maybe the server was still moving over images when you were here last, sorry about that.

Regarding the HTML, here's a couple links that will get you started.  You can always do a google search for other sites that will help you as well.

Coco

Coco - make sure you login before commenting, you get points for your time and comments here.

In answer to your question, I wrote part 1 first, then part II, but I went back to part one, edited it and added a link to part II when part II was completed.  :-)

12:43pm • #29

Michelle - I just noticed that. I'll have to check it out and see why my cut and paste images are no longer showing up. It may be a IE thing. I'll check it out in Firefox and see if there is any difference. If not, I'll have to come back and re-edit the entire post.  Thanks for commenting and bringing this to my attention. :-)))

Hey Brad - thanks for this. I was just updating my profile, and none of the changes saved - and I was docked 70 points - any thoughts on that? What did I do? Anyway, now I can't save any changes and there is an error on the page. I need to reboot and see if it goes away. I don't understand the point deduction though.

12:38pm • #34

Dawn - you might want to click on the contact AR at the botton o this screen. Not sure why points may havebeen docked.  If you are making the profile better, enhancing it, and adding more to it, it wouldn't make sense to me that you would lose any points.  Maybe it just takes the system a bit to reflect your changes and convert them to points.  Contact the AR support would be my advice on that one. Sorry, wish I could help you more.  :-)

Shelly - just use your enter key to create paragraph spacing.  You can also use HTML if you are comfortable with it.  You have 3 areas (boxes) to work with on your profile page, look at some of the samples and links I put of others. This will give you some layout ideas, then, if you get stuck, just shoot me an email and I'll walk you through whatever challenges you may have.  Hang in there, you'll get it.  You can always call me too..  :-)

Sal & I thank you for the info; we are 1 day into Active Rain & never expected to hear from anyone about anything; but I did. Actually, I had set this up very late yesterday 13 Oct. & did not get back to read this part until this time tonight.
Besides reading this "Getting Started Guide" , we actually have received other contacts. We received one for a referral in our area Michigan, but do not understand the referral fee or how to proceed. Is there another item that we can read to know how to go forward?

Brad,

Have a question; the last2 days on our site page listing all posts / comments made, we have been receiving posts made to you on the AR part11 article. Did I do something incorrect when making the comment on our 14 Oct response?  If so, how does one go about rectifying the situation? I can see below the "Norify me of..." box. If I checked that, can you 'uncheck' it for us.  I like going online direct to this Blog.

Barb and Sal - just go back to your comment, click edit, and then uncheck the "Notify me of comments" box.  It's not a good idea on some posts to check that box as some members do get large amounts of comments. I learned because I checked that box on one of Jason Crouch's posts, and my email inbox was nearly destroyed.  I think he got 2000+ comments on that one!  LOL~ :-)

RosaLinda - you can master that in a matter of minutes.  There are quite a few posts on how to do that, if you can't find them on my profile page, or in the community, let me know, I'd be happy to help you if I can.  :-)

12:05am • #87

Team Endicott - just click on the little tree    in the icon bar above your new post.  It will allow you to select a photo from your computer's harddrive.  You can use the tabs at that point for spacing, size, and alignment.

You reference Firefox quite often. Were you a Netscape Navigator guy pre-Firefox? Do you prefer Firefox because of virus issues, or other reasons?

Kevin - I think most people who use Firefox on AR never go back to Explorer.  There are too many reasons to list why I prefer FF over IE.  Maybe I'll do a post in the future breaking it all down why Firefox is the superior browser on AR.  :-)

Brad, thank you for all you do to help! Can you help me out? I added a blog post this morning and my paragraphs aren't showing. When I hit the edit button, the edit options don't show. My post is unreadable in it's current form, in my opinion. I know you're busy, but can you take a peek at my post and give me some advice? Thanks!
10:18am • #117

Leslie - I can help.  You have posted using the HTML tab.

Here's how to fix it.

1.Go to your post, click on edit, 2. click on the tab that says WYSIWYG, (don't mind the warning, just click ok), 3. then setup your paragraphs, your bold text, your links, add 1 or 2 photos and images, 4. and then click on submit post button.  That's it!!  FIXED~

You should always use the WYSIWYG tab unless you understand HTML or are adding HTML code to your posts.

Thanks for taking the time to ask for help, many people just give up and quit, but not Leslie!  I respect and appreciate that very much.  That quality has brought you and will take you far in life!

Cheers! :-)

Hi Brad-

Thanks alot for your advice. One little problem: when I click to edit, I don't have any of the tabs at the top; that is- the bullet option, the html link option, bold option, etc. I don't see those options on your comment box, either, and I think I usually would.

I just now hit the enter key, so this should appear as a separate paragraph on my post to you.

Again, thank you for your advice and encouragement! :)

* eta: my comment to you isn't showing paragraphs, either...

**eta: I went back and added < p>and < /p> to make paragraphs. I'll do the same to this post to you now. It's strange, though, because my enter key has always created the paragraphs for me. (I still am not seeing the options when I go to edit).

Hi Brad,

Why is it we can`t change our Business Category ourselves?

Tom

4:57pm • #122

Tom - great question.  There are some areas of AR that are only accessable by staff.  If you need yours changed, just let me know, I'll take care of it for you, it only takes me about 30 seconds and you're good to go.

Hi Brad,
Question: When I go to link to AR I get the html code to add to my website, but I don't get anything to allow AR to know that I linked to you. In other words, what I have on my computer screen is not the same as what I saw on the tutorial. I've linked on both my website and my outside blog and have received no points for it. Am I doing something wrong.

4:18pm • #124

Suesan - AR no longer provides linking points for adding links to outside Blogs or websites. Sorry.

How do I add my photo to my comments? Thanks for all your great help! I look forward to more help and direction. I guess I am now an Active Rain addict. I love browsing around and reading what people are saying!

6:08pm • #135

Shelby - you can upgrade your account to a rainmaker account, or wait till you get 10,000 points earned, then your photo will begin appearing in the comments that you leave on other members posts.  :-)

Thanks again, Brad - I hadn't realized we could get that creative with our profile.  I'll definitely be working on mine.

A quick Question:  In another part of your "help" blog, you mentioned letting AR know if we talk about AR on our external blog - how do we do that?  Just a note to support?

3:34pm • #137

Mike - a note to support or one of the AR community builders is fine. :-)  If you hear or see a member do a good deed (including yourself) there is a chance that one of our staff might issue bonus points to that member.  Just food for thought....   :-)

Brad, a lot of other people have said it, and I want to add my thanks for your excellent and thorough instructions!  I'm new to Active Rain (tonight!) and now have gotten addicted to all the fun things I can do...  And finally I'm on a site that actually prefers Firefox over IE -- wow!  :)  I'm with Wendy -- now to decide what and how to update my profile to make it professional, attractive, etc....any how-to's on creative juices or decision-making? <grin>

10:36pm • #148

Shoshana - if you want some ideas and creative juices, I setup a few posts on my AR profile, there are 150,000 other members who have some really great stuff to share here too.  Have fun, good luck, and let me know if you ever need anything at all here in the rain. :-)

Thanks you

12:33pm • #158

Patricia - to access your profile and make edits, updates, changes etc.  It's simple:

  1. Make sure you're logged into ActiveRain
  2. Click on the "My Home" link in upper right corner of screen
  3. Click on the "edit" link located next to your "profile
  4. Make the necessary changes, updates, and edits etc.
  5. Click on the "Update" button.

You're done. It's that easy.

If you need help, just call the number on my profile, I'd be happy to help you.  :-)

Thanks for your time in training us newbies.  I think I emailed you seperately, but I thought I would show you the problem I have here.

Everyone else's text is lined up nicely on the right of the their picture.  So far so good for me.

But

look

what

happens when I get past the picture.  I cannot work out how to line it up all on the right.

Also, it will be interesting to see if my name shows up at the bottom as Jane Peters - Los Angeles Realtor.  I won't be able to see until I hit submit.  Also, if it links to my email.

Thanks again for all your help.
