Oak Grove MN Homes for Sale, Does it come with Bears?

Black Bear Patti Ann Kasper Lino Lakes Minnesota Oak Grove Blaine Homes for Sale Real Estate ExpertWell, yes - there could be black bears in Oak Grove MN, especially in the spring.  They are extremely fond of bird feeders, but are usually gone by mid-July or so.  Since most of the long time residents of the area would like to avoid the need for a legal bear hunt, here are some tips that will help keep the bears away:

  1. Never, never, never, feed the bears.
  2. Compost your vegetable scraps.
  3. Put meat scraps in your freezer until garbage pickup day, then put them in a tightly sealed containerand place in the garbage receptical.
  4. Rinse out food cans and wrappers to reduce the smell of food in the garbage or recycling.
  5. Keep your pets' food inside.
  6. Clean your barbeque grills and picnic tables after each use.
  7. Wash your garbage cans and use lime to reduce odors.
  8. Keep garbage cans in a bear-proof container.
  9. Take you bird feeders down in the spring.  During the summer, take the feeders indoors at night.  Remember this includes seed feeders, suet, and hummingbird feeders too.
  10. Use an electric fence to keep bears away from your beehives, fruit trees, berry patches, and gardens, especially if you grow sweet corn.
  11. Sometimes, noisemakers, bright lights, or barking dogs will discourage bears.

If you encounter a bear on the ground...

  1. Don't panic (I know, easier said than done).  Don't attempt to shoot or approach a bear.
  2. Learn to be tolerant.  Just because you see a bear, doesn't mean it wants to cause trouble.
  3. Most bears fear people and will leave when they see you.  If you get too close, the bear may make wooffing sounds, slap the ground or underbrush, snap its jaws, or bluff charge.
  4. Slowly back away.
  5. Go inside and wait.  The bear will most likely leave.
  6. Don't corner a bear; always allow the bear an escape route.
  7. Throw something or make loud noises to scare the bear away.Black Bear Warning Oak Grove Minnesota Lino Lakes Blaine Real Estate Expert Patti Ann Kasper Homes for Sale

If you see a bear in a tree...

  1. Leave it alone!  The bear will leave when it feels it is safe to do so.
  2. Make sure everyone leaves the area.
  3. Take your dog indoors.

The state DNR does not remove bears for damaging property, tearing down bird feeders, or tipping over garbage cans because relocated bears generally return to the same area where they were captured.

Bears, deer, skunks and raccoons seem to live everywhere here in MN.  Being more rural  in Brainerd we have it all coyotes, wolves,& bunnies galore.

Kathleen,

Thanks for the comment!  I bet you have lots more wildlife around your home than down here.  I have family on the Iron Range and lots of bears and other critters there too.

Oak Grove is one of those exurban areas that used to be rural and is growing into more of a suburb.  So some people are a little freaked out when they move there from somewhere like Fridley because it never occured to them that there might be bears or other wildlife.  Of course, many move there because they can have the wildlife and still commute to their jobs in the city.

Have a great day and thanks again for the nice comment!
