How Green is the Future? The 2nd Annual Green is Red Hot Contest

For janeannes 2nd Annual Green is Red Hot Contest I started thinking about the future. The newest, most over used buzz word around the U.S. now seems to be "green". I can't help but wonder how effective the word "green" really is. So for a limited experiment I interviewed two girls whose mother works in my building.

Katelyn is 10 years and in 4th grade and Sophie is 7 years and in 1st grade.

The interview started  by asking both girls questions about what they knew about things that were "green" about saving energy and about being healthy.

Right away Katelyn told me she knew metal, plastic, food, paper could all be recycled. And she thinks solar power is important but she didn't know why. Also both girls concurred that animals, seeds and plants are important for the future. The sun is expendable and would soon be exhausted. They were both concerned about clean water, and raised concerns that the city might run out of water.

Houses in the future would all be "medium" sized but on larger lots spaced farther apart. In the future nobody would be walking, there would be more cars and more traffic. But on the up side cars would run off water and bad milk. All houses will someday have fireplaces for heat. But one of the most important things to do is cut up the plastic rings that hold pop cans together.

After reviewing the interview with the girls parents it became apparent that the children are heavily influenced by movies and the media in general. The March of Penguins, Happy Feet, and Doctor Who were all mentioned. While not a bad thing in my opinion, maybe all of us "in the know" could take a more personal role in future generations environmental education.

I know that this interview with Katelyn and Sophie has changed my perspective on how the future might turn out. At this time I'm planning on starting a new greendrinks in Canon City. Based on this experiment I think I'm going to encourage children to come.

Dena, Green seems to be the buzz word these days, we even went Green at McCue Mortgage this week.

Dena ...Yes another perfectly fine word ruined forever to mean something other then the simplicity of what it is!...Or it's about time we are developing the word green and wringing all of the good we can out of it. After all the English language is already full of words we don't use and to invent another would be wasteful and certainly not efficient....well I suppose we are saving energy by recycling the word "green"! We are starting a Green Drinks in our area as well!..

Dena... Interesting how much the two young girls knew about recycling and the things that are important for our well being.  Perhaps more than some adults.

Dene, I just love the perspective of kids.  But am wondering if Doctor Who is appropriate for kids that young?  I watch that show because it comes on before Torchwood on BBC and its pretty far out!

Neat stuff, Dena. Certainly the younger generations will have more problems to deal with as they get older, and need to have a better understanding of what can, and needs to be, done. Education is key, IMO. It's great what kids already know but so much more must be done. I applaud the school programs that I have hear about that emphasize the environment and our responsibility. Now to get thos government folks more active...

Dena - the future will indeed emphasize green - it is a 'save the planet or die' mode! long overdue!

Dena, they are put more emphasis on recycling white paper by providing more containers throughout the office for this purpose.  Shutting off electronic equipment at night, and installing a device to better conserve water to just mention a few things.  We have a committee set up for this and they will be incorporating more changes as we go along.

Dena thanks for interviewing the kids as a result we know were we can teach them better.  And just so Terry knows we only let the kids watch eps of Doctor Who that we have screened and deem not TO far out there.  And they NEVER watch Torchwood.  Thanks again! -C

Hi Dena - how interesting to hear what those girls already knew about green!  They probably know more than a lot of adults do at this point.  I'm learning more as a result of AR and janeAnne's eco-group.  And because of that, I'm more aware of green around me.
