For janeannes 2nd Annual Green is Red Hot Contest I started thinking about the future. The newest, most over used buzz word around the U.S. now seems to be "green". I can't help but wonder how effective the word "green" really is. So for a limited experiment I interviewed two girls whose mother works in my building.
Katelyn is 10 years and in 4th grade and Sophie is 7 years and in 1st grade.
The interview started by asking both girls questions about what they knew about things that were "green" about
saving energy and about being healthy.
Right away Katelyn told me she knew metal, plastic, food, paper could all be recycled. And she thinks solar power is important but she didn't know why. Also both girls concurred that animals, seeds and plants are important for the future. The sun is expendable and would soon be exhausted. They were both concerned about clean water, and raised concerns that the city might run out of water.
Houses in the future would all be "medium" sized but on larger lots spaced farther apart. In the future nobody would be walking, there would be more cars and more traffic. But on the up side cars would run off water and bad milk. All houses will someday have fireplaces for heat. But one of the most important things to do is cut up the plastic rings that hold pop cans together.
After reviewing the interview with the girls parents it became apparent that the children are heavily influenced by movies and the media in general. The March of Penguins, Happy Feet, and Doctor Who were all mentioned. While not a bad thing in my opinion, maybe all of us "in the know" could take a more personal role in future generations environmental education.
I know that this interview with Katelyn and Sophie has changed my perspective on how the future might turn out. At this time I'm planning on starting a new greendrinks in Canon City. Based on this experiment I think I'm going to encourage children to come.
Dena, Green seems to be the buzz word these days, we even went Green at McCue Mortgage this week.
