The Google #6 Penalty... It Could Affect You.

I just came across a post that mentioned a new penalty that Google has imposed on a number of websites that have had a #1 ranking for a lengthy period of time.  The new penalty, called the #6 penalty, has taken these website and dropped them to, you guessed it the #6 spot for the keyword that they have been ranked so well for, for so long.

There are a few speculations out there for why this has happened.  Many believe the leading cause is that many website owners are too focused on one keyword in their anchor text from external links.  If your focus is currently on one or two keywords for your anchor text you may want to head out on the web and start adding a few more keywords to your portfolio.

The Google #6 penalty has made its way to Matt Cutts of Google who explains that this is just a "hiccup" and they are working on fixing the problem.  I guess this was some sort of new testing that Google is doing to help make their search engine even friendlier for searchers.

Here are a few more post if you feel like digging around:

There's certainly lots of strange things that google does (from our standpoint anyway.)  I'm a big fan of good, quality content.  As long as you're giving to the consumer, you'll be ok.  That being said, it doesn't mean you can't be targeted in what you write.
