NICHOLS HARDWARE IS YOUR GRANDFATHER'S HARDWARE STORE and YOU'LL BE GLAD IT IS.  The first time I visited Nichols Hardware on 21st Street in the Historic Shopping Section of Purcellville, I could only think, "If you can't find it in Nichols Hardware, it hasn't been invented yet."

PURCELLVILLE, VIRGINIA, IN WESTERN LOUDOUN COUNTYis a rural community.  Rural generally means farm country, open spaces, panaramic views, small towns.  Western Loudoun County is all of those features and much more.  Loudoun County has attracted significant high tech business to the area.  With room to grow, Dulles International Airport, The Dulles Greenway Highway, significant business growth in the Ashburn areas presented the need for additional housing.  Major home builders responded with development of new home communities in Aldie, Ashburn, Sterling and Eastern Leesburg and South Riding.  However, with employment right in Loudoun County, families wanted to locate in the more rural areas of Western Loudoun County in Northern Virginia.  Beautiful new homes have been built in these small towns in Western Loudoun County in Hamilton, Waterford, Western Leesburg, Purcellville, Lovettsville and Round Hill.

Opened in 1914, Nichols Hardware is a landmark in Purcellville.  Still a family business, Nichols Hardware survived many of the fires that plagued the shops constructed of wood in the early 20th Century because the Nichols Hardware shop was wisely constructed of brick.

NICHOLS HARDWARE STOCKS WHAT THE PUBLIC WANT. 

Stock in the early Nichols Hardware reads like a history book.  Some popular items included cast iron wood burning cooking stoves that sold for $100, Stag brand house paint that sold for 1 a gallon (that made 2 gallons), a Kelvinator refrigerator that sold for $99.  Nichols updated the billing system in 1949 and started using a cash receipt where the customer got a carbon copy.  That system is still in use.  No computers in Nichols who says "You don't fix what's not broke".

Today, you can find everything you ever thought you'd need for your home from the many items stocked on these well organized shelves.  Items I've purchased at Nichols Hardware this week include a filter for my heat pump and two spools of 8 lb. test fishing line.  I'm getting ready for fishing season in Virginia.
