Realtors and Spelling are like Doctors and Handwriting

Ok, time for stereotypes..Accountants are nerdy, lawyers are all bad and travel agents like free stuff. (my mom is a travel agent and I grew up with tons of paperclip holders and sponges that looked like earth!) Ok, I think it is safe to say it is a pet peeve. Looking at all of the listings out there that have misspellings. And it doesn't end there. I have seen ads in magazines, signs and even billboards that have things spelled wrong.I just opened up Florida Realtor magazine and saw an ad from a builder which claims "Satisified Clients and Referral for Life" WOW. This is really bad. I can almost understand listings being incorrect as there is a person that is entering this data but you would think a publication would have many, many eyes on it before it hits the streets.

A few of my favorite from listings include;

A bathroom with a Hot Tube

New Warsher and Dryer (Clearly from New England)

Completely Tiled threw-out

Fully Funished

These are just a few. If you ever are bored, just do a search in the MLS and see all of the fun you can have. It is like the Where's Waldo of Real Estate. Now many will say that agents don't have to be good spellers. "They know what we mean" but I contend that bad spelling is a distraction from the listing and sends a message to the public that the agent has not taken the time to spell check and or have someone proof their work before publishing.

I already made a post about the home with the "Sparkling Poo"

I lost count of the number of times I have seen "Dinning Room"

Recently: "Shot sale: Summit an offer to the bank so we can start negotiatating" (I can't even make this stuff up)

We have started our team meetings in our office with each of us bringing in printouts of our new listings.  They get passed around the table and edited by each other for spelling, description errors and possible legal "overstatements" so that we keep in check.

Mark, I LOVE that idea of passing listings around for more eyes on it!

Steven, That's 2 F's.

Jim - You are so right.  MLS is a treasure trove of 'fun facts.'  Houses build 1n 2050 (hey, The Jetsons!), houses that 'cost' $41,000,000  but are now listed at $390,000(what a deal!) and a language that sometimes resembles English....but I can't be 100% sure.

Great post!

Jim, I also like the ideal of passing listings around for getting a different perspective. I find it helps to walk away and come back later, and review it again.

Douglas, I once dropped a zero on a listing. I did get a lot of calls before I realized what I had done.

Good Post!

Very funny.  I enjoyed the post.  It is true there are a lot of misspellings out there.

Thanks Matthew. You know I had to double and triple check the word Misspelled before I posted! :)

Too cute. You gotta love it though as it usually brings a smile to your face.

Martha, There is nothing funny about Illiteracy...As one comedienne said, "The Mind is a Terrible Thing" :)

I spent the start of my career in Elkton, MD!

I admit I made the "extra zero" mistake last week.  I guess I am not used to many properties over a million and made it a $12,000,000 property instead of $1,200,000.  Our MLS already has the last three zeroes filled in for you and I guess I added in one more.

But what a price reduction!!!!

<embarassed>

Mark, We all envy you. What's a few million between friends?

I know that I am not a great writer that is why I have someone always go over every thing I write.

You know with spell-checkers, a word that is incorrect to use in context but is still spelled correctly will pass as though nothing is wrong.

03/05/2008 10:36 AM by Steve Hoffacker - Real Estate Sales & Marketing Consulting and Strategies (Hoffacker Associates)

Steve that is a great point. To, Two and Too will all pass through spell checker. That is why another set of eyes is always best.

Aw, c'mon Jim! I don't misspell too much (except on blog posts). However I did ads for my office today and had to correct a few. Heck - I type 75 wpm including mistakes so catch them once they're made.

Thing is, spelling has little to do with a person's intelligence. Some of the most intelligent people I know are horrific at spelling.

Makes me wonder where I am on the intelligence/spelling spectrum...

Oh you are so right.  I saw a sigh today that said "Honk if your in love"  I see it all the time too, are we all just really bad at spelling or is it carelessness?

Oops, look who can't spell tonight!  How about I saw a sign today .......Time to quit and go to bed.

We're either careless, or we're all in love, each of which may cause uh... um.... carelessness!

Gina, If I alluded to the fact that intelligence and spelling go hand in hand, I did not mean to. Some very intelligent people can't spell. As far as measuring where you are on the intelligence spectrum, check out the classic IQ test on Tickle at http://web.tickle.com/tests/uiqnew/ . Always a lot of fun.

Sandra, That is very funny. I guess you can see a sigh. Reminds me of the Victor Borge who used to read the children's books and sound out the punctuations.

Gina, Congratulations on being in love! :)

Maybe we are all just so busy multi-tasking we switch our letters around!  LOL

Sandra, with all of those initials after your name, you must be a good multi-tasker!

Jim:

I think it should be mandatory that every agent and broker read Eats Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss. The book is enjoyable and educational. Then everyone must use it.

Jim, here's a review of "Eats Shoots and Leaves"....

As an ex-high school teacher, I have to fight the urge to grab the red pen when I see those errors. I proofread for coworkers and they proofread for me. And when the inevitable error slips by, I wince.
