Inman Real Estate WikiUser generated content is continuing to be a big topic in the on-line real estate world.  The most recent example, Inman News launched their Real Estate Wiki, which Brad says is "The World's Largest Real Estate Encyclopedia"  They have seeded this wiki with over 5k past articles and pieces of content from the Inman News archives, but plan on real estate professionals as being the main contributors to the site.

Zillow already has their own real estate wiki and I'm sure there are several others out there, but I get the feeling that the one on Inman News will probably get the most support and traction from the real estate community.  I went in to create a page for ActiveRain but found that Brad had already created one himself.  I added a couple of things to that article and hopefully our members will contribute too.

More information from Inman News.

I have to say that there are some good reasons to be skeptical of Wiki type resources... Facts as defined by popular opinion, being a major issue, when facts are facts, really... this is a cultural trend that warrants monitoring, I think, as we are now defining reality by popular demand or public opinion...

Beside this singular issue, the Wiki world is a good one, often self policing, and usually quite helpful.

So do you think this is a trend?

By the way, we love Active Rain... keep the energy and attention to detail that you guys have established, and I think ActiveRain will contribute to the real estate interested community more than most online resources.

I think it already does.

Have a great week Matt.

It's expected that you should be up there Matt.  What would a real estate wiki be without mention of ActiveRain.  I see that he even mentions Localism.

Can you tell me what the average daily viewership on AR is?  What is the most visitors on AR on any one day?  Do you have those stats?  I wanted to have that info to tell people when telling them about AR.  Thanks!

Jessica: The daily viewership is steadily climbing.  I can tell you during this past week it's been just about 9,000 unique visitors per day on average with 10,308 being the most we've ever hit.  While I can only make an estimate on this, I think the traffic is split 50/50 between consumers and real estate professionals right now based off of where it comes from.

Matt, I think the traffic will build quickly because I'm seeing more and more activerain posts come up in search engine results.  The net is getting wider and wider for people to stumble across the site in their wanderings.

Matt,

I have yet to spend time getting to know Inman News. I'll certainly be heading that way shortly however, thanks to your post.

Paul, I agree with you on one level. Anyone can throw up a wiki or blog, but it takes patience and discipline write responsibly (by backing up opinions with fact). To infer that user generated content is simply a "trend" however may be a gross underestimate of the influence users now have over perception - whether it's perception supported by fact or not.

As professionals who blog, I see our jobs as digging through popular opinion and either reinforcing it or challenging it with fact in a way that is compelling and will be read.

Truly, this is the wonder of the blogosphere - talking with users/consumers rather than at them.

I have to agree with Jay. It does take patience and discipline to write responsibly. Then just anyone can come along on a wiki set up and trash it. :( -Charles

Those are impressive numbers for unique visitors. Thanks for the wiki info. I am like  wonder about the policing and how the facts are proved legit.

Inman certainly has the strength to build their Wiki. It's not surprising that ActiveRain was already there.

Thanks for the update Matt. I was visiting their site the other day.  And thanks for the info on the readership on AR - it's good to know.

I agree with some of the other comments regarding the need  to write diligently, accurately and responsibly. Given Inman's reputation I would think that would not be huge issue, but given how wikis develop, one has to keep the origin in mind...and how the content got there and from whom.

We know consumers are reaching us through Active Rain - the volume of contacts quoting AR as the source is increasing.
