Jason's Friend Still Needs Our Help!

By
Real Estate Agent with Homesmart

For those of us who have been following the story of Jason Crouch's good friend, David Wilder, it has been a roller coaster of emotions.  His plight has been well chronicled by Jason and others, notably Melissa Grant, here on Active Rain, but please indulge this brief summary.

David, by all accounts, is one of the good guys.  Upbeat, talkative and just enthusiastic about life in general, he faced the daunting diagnosis of throat cancer recently.  Among other things, he lost his tongue and vocal chords to this insidious disease.  This was only half of the battle, though.

David did not have health insurance at the time of his diagnosis, and as you can imagine, the costs of his treatment have spiraled well out of control.  In addition to the challenges of learning to communicate without a voice and the expenses which are rapidly approaching (if not already there) an insurmountable level, David's family was dealt another devastating blow recently.  After general weakness and fainting spells prompted a return trip to the hospital, David and his wife, Jan, learned that the cancer had returned full force, and was wrapped around all of the vital organs of his neck.  At this point, the doctors have basically done all they can do for him aside from making the coming days and weeks as comfortable as possible.  His fate is truly in God's hands.

I wanted to take this opportunity to beseech the Active Rain community not to turn its collective back on the Wilder family now that hope appears to be waning.  More than ever, the family needs our help.  He is at home under the care of hospice, so I will not even ask you to speculate on the expense.  Whether or not a miracle spares David, his family will be left with crushing debt.  While we may not be able to alleviate this burden, we can certainly help with the day to day costs that will provide Jan with the opportunity to catch her breath and formulate a strategy.  So I urge each and every one of you that has not already done so to please help this family out in any small manner that you can.  Things are as tight in my household as they are in yours with this difficult market, but the first thing I am doing after depositing the commission check I just earned today is to make a small contribution on behalf of the Slaybaugh family to this friend of a friend.

I implore you to find it in your heart to do the same.

If you are hearing about David's ordeal for the first time, please read this post by Jason Crouch.

Such a tragedy but at the same time David has touched so many lives and brought out the best in ActiveRain members.  I hope he knows how many people are supporting him, if not in kind, in spirit.  My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Paul - I think you are also one of the good guys.  Thanks for taking the time to compose this for David and Jan.  I truly appreciate it.  As of today, we had received almost $1100 from our efforts here thus far, with much more pledged and hopefully on its way.

Paul - Thanks again for your support.  Unfortunately, some of the people who mentioned that they sent money via PayPal didn't actually do it, so that hurts a little bit.  Overall, I think we have raised about $2700 so far.

Ross Quintana I sent some and The post has also renewed my faith in AR, I posted a month or so ago and me and my family of 4 small children are in financial trouble and needed help. I didn't receive $1 after like 4 posts and only got comments. People have to realize that even $1-5 dollars from a bunch of people can really help. Doing nothing is the worst. Even if you need help yourself. We are weeks from our home going into foreclosure over $5000 dollars and we still sent $10. This is not to pat our backs, it's to tell people just like the widow in the bible who gave the two mites, there is no excuse to do nothing. Words are OK but if a person needs food and you tell them you understand their hunger, you haven't helped them. I wrote a song about this as I write worship music that sumarizes what I feel and what we have been through, here are the lyrics. It's called in need

Why can't we see , those who are in need
We are blind, to their cry
Do we perceive, or do we even try
To see the need, or hear their cry

Open up your eyes, and see
The hungry, the poor, and those in need
You won't have compassion, until it's you
Whose hungry, poor, or in need
And who will hear your cry, when it's you
I hope, now you will see
We all should help somebody, in need

I am going to do a post for this guy, though I never met him online. Because even helping get the word out is something anyone here can do. Shalom

Paul, it's great you brought this to the front again.  Jason, I contributed by paypal, and it looks like it went through.  Hopefully, every one will see this post and log in to paypal and verify the funds have been transfered.  Melissa, bless your sweet heart for what you have done for the Wilder's.  Ross, my heart goes out to you.  Your song is painfully beautiful.  It's wonderful that you could give in a time like this.
