Tattered Jeans, Worn Out T-Shirt, and Dirty Shoes

Stylish SlobOkay, so I've seen a few posts from the past regarding Dressing for Success, but I've gotta do it. I'm thinking of printing them and sending them to a few agents in town.

When growing up, our Father was disappointed with us because he wanted us to wear casual dress clothes. Being kids, we wanted our tattered jeans, worn out t-shirts, and dirty shoes. After all, that's what everyone else was wearing. Dad used to say "Dress for success. You never know when you will run into someone you may want to impress". How true is that statement! But, we were just kids. Who cared what we were wearing.

ImagineIt amazes me today, how many agents we have in town that don't think about their appearance.

I went into an office one day to pick up keys and was greeted by an agent wearing frayed, highwater jeans, faded shirt, and dirty shoes. Had she just popped in on a day off? Had she been crawling under a house with a client? NO! She was there on her floor duty.

Then there is the agent that comes into the office in which I work for his floor time wearing faded jeans and a tight, white t-shirt to show off his physique. Ugh!

And the one I ran into at Wal-Mart on a Sunday afternoon. She was wearing stained sweats and dirty shoes, her hair was greasy and uncombed, no makeup, etc. Okay, so maybe she had been redecorating at home and ran out of paint. NO! She had a cart full of groceries and household supplies. I should probably keep this to myself, but I dodged her to save her the embarrassment of running into somebody she knows looking like she did. Not to mention the fact that I was a little irritated because she represents the same company as I.

All three of these agents have commented lately that they aren't making any money. They blame it on the economy or other agents stealing their clients. I just want to scream to these people "Look in the mirror! Would you do business with yourself".

After that brief moment of irritation, I smile to myself thinking "keep wearing your tattered jeans, worn out t-shirt, and dirty shoes. I appreciate the business it sends my way!".

Businessman

Business WomanI'll admit, I like my jeans. They go well with some of my sweaters and button ups. Add a few accessories and a pair of heels and I'm ready to go. When it's appropriate.

I also know when to put on the pantsuit and pull up the hair. After all, you never know when you will run into someone you may want to impress!

Lissa- I agree with you, one of the things I train my agents on is to market themselves wherever they go, so they should be wearing clothes to impress.

Wow, I agree.  I met an agent at a house recently to do an appraisal and he was in a ratty t'shirt and jeans and I said wow, isn't he comfortable...when I met him to do another appraisal about a week later, the dress was the same...he proceeded to excuse  himself and say it was his day off...sorry,  I don't buy it...dress it up a bit!!

Nice Blog Lissa,

I agree - many have gotten too casual.  BUT - like you said, it sends business our way.  I dress casual - that means to me dockers type pants, nice top and a jacket/blazer.  To many its jeans.  If you are going to a ballgame - ok - but I've seen that dress at home inspections, closings, etc.

A mentor once told me - dress for the position you want, not the one you have.  HMMM....

Lissa:

My mother always told me to "dress for success".  This is so true, if you want to be successful you have to be the part.

Thank you for a very important reminder of how our appearance and how we take care of ourselves as human beings affects our everyday lives.

Pam: Even dressed up jeans is fine in my book when you're shopping, etc. I just can't believe some of the things people wear when they are in this type of business.

Patrice: You've got it girl!

April: I like your mentor!

Stephanie: It's kinda like going hunting without a gun. You've got to be prepared!

Lissa, Lissa, Lissa....  your my fav clothes person (got any that don't fit ya, my closet is getting low)!  The other thing that I have learned is that you don't have to copy someone else's "style" to dress for Success!  I follow my own path with my Plaid Slacks, and try not to overdo the makeup.

I see agents in my office all the time in shorts and t-shirts, or in jeans. I just can't bring myself to dress like a slob in a place of business. In my opinion, what everyone else wants to do is their business, but as for me, I'm in a suit and tie on a daily bases.

Lissa:  Have you been following me down the yellow-brick-road again?  Are you the good witch or the bad witch??  I'm starting to wonder.  Recheck your closet honey, I'm sure you got something in there for me! Hey, got any new shoes?  I'm in the need for some new Wedges!!!!!

I've noticed the work place has become a little too casual as well, especially in church, what happened to the Pastor wearing a suit and tie?

Cindy: I guess they don't want to intimidate their congragation. I think people forget about respect though. Don't you respect someone more when they at least look kinda professional?

Lissa, you've made some great points.  Here's another thing to consider -- some dress rules depend on your market.  I agree that absolutely NOTHING should be tattered.  But if you are selling beach or rustic properties, you have a bit of leeway.  My company is Malibu based (although I'm in Topanga Canyon) and it is fairly casual.  In a market like that, you are selling a lifestyle along with a home.

Personally, I wear dress pants and sweaters for appointments and floor time.  Jeans are for showing land (we need hiking boots here, too) and sometimes jeans in the office when I'm not up.  My market is rustic and casual -- within reason.  One still should be professional.

I agree. I don't wear a pantsuit to a listing presentation or showing of a $75,000 home. Overdressing tends to intimidate people. That's when it's time for "casual dress". I wear jeans if I'm going out to a farm or walking land. But as you said, One still should be professional.

My supervisor made a comment that I intimidate people because of the way I dress. i am always fashionably dressed all the time. Even when I wear jeans, I wear low heels and a blazer. I was always taught by my mother to leave the house dressed appropriately, not in tattered jeans, or sweats or stained clothes. yet the company has a dress policy. I do not wear anything low cut or short. I was always taught to dress for success
