A bill that was signed into law back in May 2006, but didn't go into effect until Jan. 1 may have been overlooked by those of you owning a business.  If you are in charge of the payroll or are in business for yourself, then keep reading as there is a law that applies to the issuance of paychecks.

In a polling of business owners in Maryland, several business owners did not realize that as of Jan. 1, 2007, it is now illegal to print Social Security Numbers on paychecks and wage statements.  Many businesses have been using SSNs on the paychecks or at least the paystubs for years and could have issues if they have not changed the format.

Why is it that businesses may have missed it?  Well, quite simply, the bill lacked any direction on how to notify businesses of the new law.
