Being able to sell internationally has been a dream of mine for over seven years.

About a year and a half ago, I took the first step.  I took the introduction class for the CIPS designation.  It was a real eye opener.  It lead to a trip to Mexico City for the NAR-AMPI conference, in which, both Associations became official partners.  AMPI is Mexico's version of NAR.  It was a great event, then President of Mexico, Vicente Fox attended!  I got those pictures up in my office and I talk about them to everyone.

I felt that this was something I could do.  I realized that my mistake was trying to do it all myself.  I got together with a few agents in my office and we made a committment to each other.  We have spent a lot of time and money in order to find the way!  I could not have done it without them.

In the next coming months, I will have a lot more first hand experience to share.  It is almost too exciting to believe but it is coming true for us.

For those of you that are in it alone, please think of us (Tu Casa Real Estate, Oregon Assoc. of Realtors Int'l Biz Council, CIPS members) as a resource.  Once you receive your CIPS designation, you need to find new ways to educate yourself on international dealings.  Through the NAR, you will find many resources and opportunities to network.  Attend as many as possible to see what others are doing.  Dealing internationally has many different paths, you will need to find the one that fits you.

While the vision of being able to travel, make some money, and handle international transactions sounds great.  What will make you succesful is finding a niche, a true need of the people.  Once you find it, the ability of being able to help others is what makes it all worth it!

That is very cool that you're doing something you love. I also work with international transactions- it's so fun.

Jose great info on the team concept. Being a resort broker we get some international clients and Deanna and I have been really thinking of playing this up. With our dollar as weak as it is international clients can really steal real estate right now.

Good luck can't wait to hear more.

Chuck: The fact that I love it is what keeps me going.  I was reading the other day about the one "key habit" that every successful agent has.  This article stated that many peope assume that a high IQ (Intelligence Quotient) or EQ ( Emotional Quotient- the ability of connecting with others) are the important ones.  In fact, it is the TQ ( Tenacity Quotient)!!  They found that the single most important habit is to keep on perservering no matter the challenges.  Loving what I do is what keeps me going so I hope that is the same for you!

Jason and Deanna:  Your client base is a goldmine!  Those are the exact clients that either are able to or know others that can buy internationally.  I am asked to speak at various Realtor events in my state.  The first tip I give to agents that ask me "How do I start Internationally?", is to start with your current sphere of influence.  Ask friends, family, current clients what areas of the world interest them.  Also if there is a particular area that you want to concentrate on ( Cancun, Costa Rica, Italy), then educate yourself on that area and spread the word.  It would also help if your area of choice is a place that you are familiar with and have traveled to before.  That is the start that can help you form your plan to do business internationally!

Good Luck!

The Team approach is certainly a necessity when it comes to International Real Estate, there's just too much for one person to handle!

Have you posted any updates as to how your team is doing in the months since you originally posted?

08/19/2008 04:47 PM by Nishika Jones Luxury Ft Lauderdale (International Luxury Rentals)

Nishika, I have yet to post updates.  What I did do is create a new Group named VIVAMEXICO.  I will send you a Invite and my plan is to start posting actual experiences very soon.  The member count is high enough where I would receive the feedback I was looking for.  Thanks and let me know if there is any part of what I am doing that could help you!

Gracias!
