Last year, my sister introduced me to a guy named Perry Baltimore who is the president of the Marshall Legacy Institute. This group raises funds to train dogs like Granite here to sniff our land mines. They are operating in eight countries around the world. After talking to him for just a few minutes, I knew this was a group I want to support.
Land mine detection is a dangerous business, and all too often, a mine is detected when an innocent child (or adult for that matter) steps on it - often years after the conflict that put it in the ground has been settled. The dogs, with their keen sense of smell, are able to pick up the scent of some of the land mine explosives and point their handlers to the location.
It costs about $20,000 to train one of these guys. And that's where the Marshall Legacy comes in.
Founded in 1997, the Marshall Legacy has been helping to train dogs to find the mines. This year, they reached a big milestone when the 101st and 102nd dogs were put into service.
One of their partners is a group called CHAMPS - Children Against Land Mines. Their web site has great information about the dogs, and how they are trained for a job that would be hazardous using old fashioned metal detectors.
Every year at tax time, I am reminded that I need a few more write-offs, and for 2008, one of mine is going to be a check to the Marshall Legacy.
Maybe if I donate a bunch, they'll let me adopt Granite here when he retires! I'm sure he'd love to have a type-A workahaulic real estate broker as his human!
What a beautiful dog! Sadly the only thing my dog Casey can sniff out is FOOD. She is a Beg A Holic!
