help key

It all started when I won the big drawing at the CRS Sell-a-bration in Honolulu.  The grand prize was a very expensive SEO package from Randy Eagar's company Webstarget.  I will write more about that once they are able to complete the project.  I am quite excited to see how much of an impact this makes for my business.

His expert Garrett immediately caught a problem with my website and domain.  This is a lesson that will be useful for many of our members.

The search engines do not recognize my domain names, because they are not parked with the websites.  The search engines can find the sites, but under the actual address of the site and not through the domain name.  To fix this I have to park them with the same service.

I had my domains registered and parked at http://www.godaddy.com/ a wonderful vendor that I have nothing but praise for.  I have my websites on http://www.homestead.com/.  I have used this service for years and had nothing but praise for them until this week.  Hopefully they will win my loyalty back, but as I write this post I am still having problems for the third straight day.

Until this week I used a forwarding service from GoDaddy to send people to my website when they typed in the domain name.  I did not realize that is different than pointing to the site.  After researching the issue with both vendors, what appeared to be a simple fix was attempted.  By simply changing the settings on my domains I could shut down the forwarding and park the domains with the same service as my websites, while keeping the purchasing and registering of the domains at GoDaddy.  Wow that sounds wonderful.  A couple of key strokes and I am all set and ready to turn the keys to my site back over to the SEO experts.

With both accounts on the screen I followed a few step by step instructions with tech support from Homestead and that will do it.  I was so happy.  He then said it will take 1-3 days depending on how fast the updates happen at GoDaddy (They were instant).

Later in the day I was getting a little annoyed that a counter offer I was expecting still hadn't come in.  I then noticed a lack of e-mail messages. How Lost Would You Be Without E-mail?

After a few quick checks I realized my e-mail was not working.  I went back and checked and my website domains were still not working either.

After going back into my Homestead account I found a disclaimer that when you point the domains to them your e-mail will no longer work.  Now that is a useful piece of information I could have used before shutting me down!!

After many phone calls to the tech support guys the fix to that problem was supposed to have been made early yesterday morning.  We are now waiting for homestead to update my system to get it working.  That has been since early yesterday morning.  There is still no sign of relief.

I hope they get me up today and not leave me sucking wind all weekend.  If and when we get past this mess, I will post the results from the SEO project.

Randy that really sucks.  Man I would be dead in the water without being able to get e-mails form my office keeping up-to-day on the rates and the status of my loans.  GOOD LUCK!!!!

I too have a homestead sight..I love it.....  but are you saying that if you "point" a domain name from go daddy.that it won't show up in searches...unless it's "parked"..I'm confused

Konnie - In GoDaddy, you can forward your domains to your Homestead account.  If you do that the domain names will not be recognized by the search engines.  The actual website with the Homestead address will.

There is another process that will allow you to park the domain on Homestead while continuing to register them with GoDaddy.  It requires changing the settings on both Homestead and GoDaddy.  If you have e-mail tied to the Domain, it will stop working.  There are additional MX settings GoDaddy can provide that the Homestead guys have to change for you.  That will allow the e-mail to continue to work after parking the Domain with Homestead.

I am currently hung up, because homestead has not made the needed changes and my e-mail and Domain names are dead.

Randy, you are bringing back some memories; not happy ones either.  I did not do the forwarding but I did decide to save some money and put my website at a cheap host.  What  a nightmare.  I realized my site was now hosted in India and you could only get email support and I was always called sir.  That of course messed all my email messages up also.  That was my "you get what you pay for lesson."  I hope you get it straightened out soon!!

Marchel - I have been with Homestead for several years and never had anything close to this happen before.  Unfortunately they have gone home for the day and I am still not up and running.

We've been without e-mail for about 10 days - who knows how much business we've lost?? - and finally today switched our website (and accompanying e-mail) from iPowerWeb to goDaddy. Hopefully we'll have e-mail up again by Monday - waiting for the DNS servers to switch over now.

You can always have your website at one location and your email at another.  That's what we do.

Sharon - Good Luck.  If they can't get me up and running, I will have to move everything soon.

John - That is what I have, but because they brought down my domain name and the e-mail is tied to the domain it is all down.

Randy - Thanks for the tip... I didn't realize that having a domain pointed rather than parked meant the name didn't show up... interesting.  The disclaimer about the loss of service needs to be in serious bold print so you can make accommodations... I've been down that road and it is not pretty.

Tom - Thank you.

Jesse and Kathy - On GoDaddy forwarding is the one that the search engines will not pick up.  If it is parked with the same company as the website and pointed then it will be seen by the search engines.  At least that is how the tech guys explained it.  If it ever gets back up and running I will be able to verify that.

Personally...I would rather just mange my own domains....I don't seem to have any issues and receive leads all the time....just last night as a matter of fact....an old neighbor who moved out of state was able to find my number and called me to list her home...Hopefully it will go up next week when-she sends me back the package. Hopefully you'll straighten out yours quickly. I use Yahoo domains versus go daddy...its a lot easier and les complicated.

Interesting post, Randy. I guess if you have your domain name registration and site host the same cource you are better?

Randy, I'm confused. I buy many domains from go-daddy and their support is excellent. I point them to say my KW site which is a long confusing URL. But, when I point it I click the masking thing and then people type in, BuyAnnArborRealEstate that is what is in the address bar, not the long KW thing.

Is this what you are talking about?

Wow...That does sound confusing. I sure hope your e-mail is up and running soon. I was 6-7 hours behind in my e-mail and drove me batty..so I know how you feel.

Neal - GoDaddy is super easy.  they are not the problem.  The problem is with Homestead, I have been down now for the 4th day waiting for them to key in a few changes.  If I can not resolve the problem I will have to move my websites away from Homestead, probably to GoDaddy.

Missy - No I was doing that.  The issue is that when your site is found by Google for example they can pick up the site with the long KW address.  When it looks at you domain name it does not see a site.  That is if you used the forwarding and masking from GoDaddy.

If instead you put in the nameservers for the location where your website is and have the Domain name parked there, then point the domain to the site it should in theory resolve that.  That is the change that has been hung up for me.  If you do that you either have to move your domain e-mail account to the same service or have additional changes made to the domain (MX numbers).

I am also waiting for Homestead to make those changes.  So my domains and e-mail will not work until Homestead keys in those two changes.

Everything at GoDaddy was done instantly.  Thus the reason I have such praise for them.  Their customer service is the best I have ever seen.

Randy, I am a GoDaddy fan as well. Its inexpensive to experiment with new domain names. Actually, its inexpensive to buy domain names. I love the feature of having 90 extensions (you can give each listing its own id if you want). Plus each domain has a free blog if you have time to work with it.  I also empathize, but on the lemonade side--think of the spam you are missing. Congratulations on your win!

Suzi - I have the domains up and running, but still waiting for the e-mail.  Fortunately the e-mail is now giving error messages to senders so they know it is not up.

Yeah I had the same situation with godaddy but my site is at point 2. It's set up now and it's great.

Randy.... what seemed like a day with good news, but then followed by bad news, must have been a big downer. I agree.... it would have been nice to know what would have happened before you did shut things down. But a big congrats on winning that SEO package. It will be interesting to see what kind of feedback that you will have in upcoming weeks.

Randy, are you using your free email that comes with godaddy? The cool thing about GoDaddy email is that you have 1 free email address that you can check by webmail and forward to tons of places.. for instance: whoever@mgcre.com , or whoever@mgcrealty.us , whoever@connect2buyers.com  etc, etc

can be checked at go daddy web mail in your account , forwarded to yahoo, gmail or anywhere else, and of course set to work with Outlook, etc.

Suzi - The strange thing is I didn't realize I get a free one.  I have the e-mail package that I bought.  During this problem the GoDaddy guys credited me back for services I over bought.  How cool is that?

I can say nothing but praise for them.  For such a big company, I have never witnessed the level of quality customer they have displayed, now and in the past.  I may have to write a blog post when this is over just talking about their service.  We could all learn a few things from them.
