I know that as real estate agents, you get ask all the time by the homeowners the age old question of "How long is my (you fill in here) going to last? How long can I expect my dishwasher to last or what about the roof. The average home owner wants to know the average life expectancy of these normal house hold components and they expect you to know the answer. So I thought I would help you out a little with a few answers.
Refrigerators will last about thirteen years, and dryers will last about the same amount of time. The dishwashers and microwave ovens have a life expectancy of about nine years. Compactors only last about six years and a gas stove will have the longest life spen of about fifteen years. The life expectancy also depends on how well an appliance is treated. My mothers dishwasher in our first home lasted almost 20 years, but then she made us practically wash the dishes before we ever put them in the dishwasher.
Kitchen cabinets usually last a least fifty years or more and granite counter tops, if cared for properly, will last a lifetime. Most home owners get tired of the looks of these two things before they ever wear out.
When choosing your exterior doors you may want to go with wooden or fiberglass over vinyl. Vinyl will only last about twenty years, while the wood and fiberglass doors should last a life time unless you have small children and then they're worn off the hinges. "Close the door, was you raised in a barn or go in or out but chose one"
As far as the life span of components around the home there is one thing I have figured out is that most things around a home will out last the actual home owner. It seems that I remember reading some where that the home owner moves every seven to ten years, is that the trend?
