Did you know that Westland started out as Bucklin Township, then became Lima Township, then became Nankin Township, and then the city of Westland?
In 1827, the land which is now Westland, Livonia, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Redford Townshipbecame Bucklin Township. Two years later in 1829, BucklinTownship was divided into Lima and Pekin Townships. Lima Township was quickly changed to Nankin Township because early postal regulations said no two counties/townships could be named the same.
In 1835, however, Livonia Township split from Nankin Township, which at that time included the area we recognize today as Westland, Wayne, Garden City and Inkster. During the early 1960s, the city of Livoniawanted to annex the part of Nankin in which a large shopping mall, Westland shopping center was to be built. The shopping center eventually opened in 1965, joining Northland & Eastland malls as some of the earliest malls in the US. cities. In reaction to Livonia's annexation attempts, the people of Nankin voted to change the remainder of the township to a city. Westland, Michigan became a city on May 11,1966.
Did you know that Westlandwas once part of the biggest townships in the world. Nankin Township once boasted a population of over 70,000 in the late 1950's and early 1960's and was considered a huge township.
