I am starting a series on my 1% BETTER EACH DAY TOPIC.  I have had great feedback on this topic, but until now I have not gotten real specific on how someone can do 1% BETTER EACH DAY.  I thought I would do that by giving examples in various areas of peoples lives that I feel most people want to improve. Go to my 1% BETTER page to get caught up on previous details.

I am starting with the area of HEALTH because its probably the most important area.  If you don't have your health nothing else matters much.  If you had all the money you could possibly dream of, but did not have your health you could not enjoy the money anyway.  Maybe you love spending time with your family, but again if you don't take care of your health you could be one heart attack away from not seeing your family again.  So I would imagine that most would agree that HEALTH is of high importance.

How do we measure 1% BETTER EACH DAY?  How I measure it would be by setting a goal.  If you set a goal today you are likely at 0% of your goal. Once you reach your goal you are at 100% because you achieved your goal.

For example: I had a goal to get my weight down to 225 lbs.  I was at 240 lbs.  I am 6'5 so I didn't look like I needed to lose weight.  However, I knew that I did not feel good at 240 lbs.  It had really been years since I was at 225 lb.  I have been floating between 230-250lbs for that past 7 years.

When I evaluated myself I found I eat the wrong foods, I eat too many calories and I needed to work out a little bit better.

EATING BETTER: I needed to get more colored foods in my diet.  That means more fruits and veggies.  I also was normally going over the calorie threshold for weight lose. For me that is about 2400 calories a day.  Knowing that if I got that down to about 1600 calories a day I could lose about 1/3 of a pound.  Combine that with a 500 calorie burning work out I could lose a little more then 1/2 pound a day.

MY GOAL: I thought I would break down the goal of losing 15 lbs to losing about 2 pounds a week over 7 weeks.  Which is losing about 1/3 a day.  Based on the above info. its real easy.  You just have to do the following:

1. Watch Your Calories- Helps to eat lower calorie foods like fruits and veggies.

2. Burn extra calories by working out.

BE DILIGENT: It takes diligence to reach any tough goal.  Lets admit it!  For most people losing 15 pounds is a struggle.  You might lose it and then gain it back.  Have you ever done that before?  I discovered that by making a constant and earnest effort to reach my goal I was making progress.  Each day that you gain ground on your goal, even if its just doing 1% better each day, you are still gaining ground, moving forward and using momentum to keep it rolling.

END RESULT: In just over 7 weeks (52 days) I did get my weight down to 225 lbs.  That's approximately 1/7th of the year.  In that time I improved 100% in my health based on the goal I set.  I feel great.  I feel the best I have since college.  I lost 3 inches from my waist line.  I was working out once a week with a personal trainer which helped me to add 1.5 inches to my arms.  I feel like people would bounce off me if they ran into me - that's how solid I feel.  I felt pretty crappy before.  So if your saying 15 lbs. isn't a big deal and isn't 100% improvement, that is your thought, not my thought - for my its 100% improve and if you did the math about a 2% improvement each day over that time.

WHATS THIS MEAN FOR YOU: Most people could lose some weight.  Many people could lose a lot of weight. Even if you have 50 lbs to get to your ideal weight I want to encourage you to do it.  Its pretty simple.  Try for 1/3 pounds a day.  ANYONE CAN DO THAT!  Watch the calories, eat some colored foods and work out a little more.  YOU CAN DO IT!

If you don't need to lose weight perhaps you can benefit by eating better foods and by working out and increasing muscle.  Find the truth and help for you in this!  1% BETTER EACH DAY IS EASY! IT FEELS GOOD!

Chuck - You make losing weight almost sound easy! LOL. You break it down in a way that everyone should be willing to give it a go! I like the idea of 1%!

Great job Chuck. You are absolutely correct. Without your health you have nothing.  Unfortunately most people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies.

Great post Chuck.  I am revamping my life and need to eat more colored foods as well as more healthy foods and less of them...I will look at this on a smaller scale and it seems much more achievable, thank you for that

Chuck, you make good points. Small attainable goals will turn into large and seamingly out of reach goals.

Ok Chuck, we will be watching you...hoping you maintain with no gain (weight wise that is). I loved your outlook & information. Right now, I am back where I never dreamed of weighing again, but I've lost it before, can do it again, and I did it very much like you, taking baby steps...improving diet, setting some rules to follow, making an attainable goal. Way to Go! Congrats - Carla
