Spiders sniff out the fresh stuff

Are you keeping your site fresh and up to date?   Constantly updating the content on your site will give it more importance in the search engines's eyes.  That's why blogs work.

The fact that Google owns Blogger shows just how important Google views fresh content.  In fact, after posting on my blog here on AR I have noticed that Google indexes my new post within a matter minutes!  Brilliant.

But, keeping your website fresh is much more difficult as your site can have many hundreds of pages.

One of things that I do and that has really helped me is to allow people to comment on my content, much the same as people can do with their blogs.

It means that when the spiders return to those pages it often finds new additional content.  This in turn means that you will get spidered more often and also help in your SERPS positions.

Allowing people to comment on your content is also a great tool to include interactivity with your website (very web 2.0) and also goes towards your need for "social proof".

Keep your content fresh....it helps!

Hey Justin, spiders have always scared me to death (especially those gigantic Florida spiders that hang on the ceiling) - - but in this case I love them because of my blogging website

Susie, spiders scare the hell out of me too!

Sara, AR is a great community, you shouldn't have to struggle with anything.  Lots of people here with lots of great knowledge.  If there's anything specific you need some help with then just post it in the comments and I'll do my best to help you out and maybe others can pick up some bits too.

It is an interesting way to do it. Have you had trouble with negative or inappropriate remarks? One comment was responded to well, but on my one blog, I have received an off-the-wall comment on occasion. Only once did I delete one of these comments; however, I thought this forum as on your site may cause more such remarks to increase. Any problems?

Frank, I do often get inappropriate comments on the sites.  If they are from people who have had negative experiences I always try to respond with some reasons why or offer them some support.  If they are totally out of order I just delete them!!  It does take some moderating, especially if you have a large site, but the site I linked to above has thousands of pages and some of the most important ones (which make up 4500 of those pages) wouldn't rank very well if it wasn't for the content added to those pages by visitors to the site.

It works well and also as people add content to the pages it means you get more traffic as you have more content, so your pages are more likely to appear in the search results for more long tail key phrases.
