Help me choose a Carolina

Calling all Carolinians! I would like to buy a retirement home, or buildable land for a vacation and future retirement home in one of the Carolinas. I just can't decide which one. I have family in Virginia, so North would be closer to them. But my current home is in Alaska, and going someplace warm for winter vacations is important too. I'd like someplace with low taxes (doesn't tax military retirement)  and low cost of living of course. On or near a major waterway, and within walking distance to a quaint area with amenities like coffee shops, restaurants, post office, theatre/arts. I've been told New Bern, NC might fit the bill. Any other ideas?

Hi Tracey- I have both good news and bad...I have a friend from one of them and he once told that there was ONLY ONE CAROLINA...the bad news is that I can't remember which one he said...

Good Luck!

Cheers-

Mike

Hi, Tracey - Funny that you mention New Bern... Kathy's family is from eastern NC and we have a piece of ground near Oriental...45 minutes east of N.B.  New Bern is a great community...The only thing that we've found to be missing is a bigger airport.  You can fly in/out but it can be a challenge.  Property is still relatively reasonable and the area is nothing short of breathtaking.  No mountains though and that we did miss a little.
