We received a number of comments about the dining room photo that we took of that little condo, so I thought I would take the time to dig up the before picture so that it could be compared with the after-the-editing photo. If you want to see a big image of the after shot with some comments about my editing, click here. Here are small copies of the before and after images:

I then moved the umbrella and got out of the picture to reshoot the mirror, still leaving the camera, the big TV in the corner, and the corner of that table that the giant TV sat on. It requires some painstaking work to remove such stuff with the clone brush. Maybe an hour or so of editing. But the final pic came out pretty nice in the end, I think.

The one lighting item that really suprised me was how much light was reflecting off of that dining room table....see how hot it was. I cooled that down with an HDR image overlaid on top of the table.

Finally, I should note...we put the property into escrow last week! Let's hear it for escrows!

Thanks again for sharing your techniques.  On this shoot, was the umbrella the only flash lighting used?  It looks like there may have been a slave in the kitchen.

Don, No slave in the kitchen, but the overhead light and the sink light were on, and I was dragging the shutter, which is how it got so hot.  I always keep a couple of dimmer sliders in my bags to keep desk lamps from getting too hot (I just dim them down until I get the right look), but these lights were on switches.  It's very difficult to take the "perfect" picture, and I don't even know how long it would have taken me to improve that.  Since it was out of the way (i.e., not the center of the photo), I just let it slide in an effort to get a good enough photo.  It makes me think of a quote I heard, "Perfection is the enemy of the good." (attributed to Voltaire at famous-quotes.com)

Actually, John, I thought it was a nice effect... not a defect... All in the eye of the beholder.

Don, you are too generous.  I'm glad it was viewed as a feature.  I'll say that about shooting pics as HDR without flashes....you never get blown-out anything.  The trouble is, things seem to go grey pretty fast.  I still prefer using the flashes and not doing HDR for the bulk of the interiors.  I guess I'm just not comfortable enough yet with editing the stuff.

Don, you and John are real photography geeks not to make a joke out of having a "slave" in the kitchen.  :)

The bright reflection on the table is interesting.  I swear it is so easy to miss a little detail like that until someone points it out!

This line made me laugh "Let's hear it for escrows!"  It made me imagine a whole stadium full of fans shouting "ES-CROW! ES-CROW! ES-CROW!"

Still a good picture.  The first one was good and the second is that much better.
