I know my parents looked at me the same way your parents did when you were born. Nothing was going to stop you, whatever you chose to do, you were going to be great and nothing was going to stop you!

Then, as we grew, the world was slowly putting thoughts in your mind, making us doubt ourselves. I recently looked at playground equipment where I would jump from one bar over six feet to another bar that was lower. I was half the size that I am now and I had no fear, I could do it, and I never missed. I look at that same bar, which is now over 3 feet closer because of my height, but I wouldn't even think about making that jump! Fear and self doubt have gotten to me also.

From age 5 to 13 we would choose what we wanted to do with our life and nothing was going to stop us from doing that - NOTHING! Then, someone whispered in our ears that we can't do that, we could never succeed. I know I'm not doing what I wanted to do when I was younger. Why? Because someone told me I couldn't, and I listened!

You are great and you can do anything you want. Throw those bad, negative thoughts out and start anew today! I believe in you as long as you promise to believe in yourself first! If you start to doubt yourself, I want you to join me and join a program at your local schools called S.M.A.R.T. (Start Making A Reader Today) and hang out with some of these kids! They are working to make themselves better by becoming better readers and your job is to tell them they can do it and help them in their journey. But, why can't they help you in your journey to greatness?

These kids will ask you what you do and tell you how great you are and they are right, you just need to believe it, like your parents did when you were born! Believe in yourself as I believe in you and go out today and be great!

Todd, what an inspiring post. I've never heard of the reading program, but my girls are avid readers and I'm going to check into it. Thanks.

Todd-Is't it amazing how as Adults we can destroy the dreams of a child as easily as telling them all the reasons why they shouldn't, or couldn't do it?  I have one Granddaughter that I call the Mermaid.....she thinks so differently than the others, and is such the little Artist.  Who knows what her life will be, but I try to tell her that she can choose anything she wants, and that Mermaids are special. The others used to pick on her,  but now she's confident in herself......:)

Todd,

Great post...add 'age' to fear and self doubt and you really have a dilemma...unless you see 'age' as a positive thing, i.e. gaining wisdom and knowledge, etc.!!! Thanks,   Fran

P.S. Even fear and self doubt can be positive qualities if channelled properly!!!

Todd, I am always on my kids about reading but now if they see me volunteering with kids at their school, maybe I will get them to up their daily reading time.  I'm going to go jump off the top of a slide later and see if it still feels like jumping out of a helicopter.

Kathy - Congratulations on making her realize that she is special, because she is!

Fran - Ok, we may have to talk about that... Maybe fear is good if you write horror films.

Mark - reading is very important it was something I didn't do at all as a kid, but now I do a lot more even if it is kids books. But, I now see what I missed out on as a kid.
