I just read an article, Real Estate Cold; Real Estate TV Hot, which highlights some of the new real estate themed shows that are coming our way.....I thought we had enough!

What was the one where potential buyers spent the night in the house?  Well, there is another version of it called "Date My House" and it will be hosted by Bob Guiney.  He is from "Bachelor" fame......uugghh....

Just a sample of what we, as the actual professionals, will be up against are:

  • House Hunters
  • My First Place
  • Hidden Potential
  • Buy Me
  • Design to Sell
  • Date My House
  • Flip That House
  • Flipping Out
  • Trading Spaces
  • Sell This House

And those are just the ones mentioned in the article!  What really kinda bothers me about this is how it plays on the emotions of home owners and potential home buyers.  There have been numerous times that I have been faced with a seller that thinks because they took the advice of one of these shows on tv that they should be able to reap the rewards with a higher list price.  Folks, it just isn't happening.

Well, hang tight, my friends.....it would appear that there are more on the way which will equate to more disillusioned buyers and sellers out there....... When will this craziness stop????

I am kind of glad that they do not show the mortgage reality shows.  Well, I am surprised that there is not one yet.

People are still facinated by real estate, especially before and after remodeling. I suspect that many of these shows will just fade away now.

Great post!!  There are definitely too many real estate shows on tv that make looking for a home way too easy, the last time I looked it took longer than half an hour to meet a realtor, look at homes, decide which one you like, write a contract, settle and move in.  Reality is, there's so much more to it than that and it gives buyers, especially first time buyers the wrong impression.

Rob - I'll check out your post.  It honestly is really becoming too much!  The weekend warriors upgrading and updating their homes with materials that they will never be able to recoup the money from.  But, the tv's shows say they will - so, it must be true......

Don't get me wrong - I am all for updating and upgrading but, within reason!

Makes me soooooo glad to be in commercial real estate.

Uh oh,  I think I just opened to door to:  "Flip this Commercial / Industrial Space"  or . .

"Design to Sell - Office / Professional Edition" . . .

Naaaah !  Those shows only sound interesting to me....  :-)

Wayne -  I hope they do fade away.  They were really cute for a while but now?

June - Yep, it takes no time at all!  Amazing how editing can condense everything down.  I do feel for first-timers like you mentioned.....

Brian - You better watch it......Donald Trump may have something in the works right now!

HEY!  You left out PROPERTY VIRGIN!  Have you seen THAT little gem???  yuck!

House Hunters is a game show really.  It's not realistic at all.  I actually had buyers last spring that saw 9 houses in one afternoon, narrowed it down to three...with one they LOVED.  But because there were not 3 that they LOVED, they felt that one home could not have been THE ONE.  "It's not like House Hunters."  And how surprised were they when it turned out that the contract was not just one page.

Eleanor - Maybe I subconsciously blocked that one!

Chris Ann - It is funny!  You made my point beautifully - tv is not REAL LIFE!

L

Bobby G, was a loan officer back in Michigan before he hit fame with The Bachelor!

The only thing worse in my mind is the number of "constants" on Reality shows from our industry...it seems that every show has to have the token "real estate agent". They usually make for great TV but bad imagery for our business.

03/12/2008 09:38 AM by Real Living Partners

Scott - YES!  The "agents" on tv do not portray us well at all!  They also make buyers and sellers look clueless.  I just get frustrated when I am confronted with the shows by a buyer or seller....folks, it's tv!

Leesa... in all honesty, I try to ignore stuff like this... because as you pointed out, it's not reality... and so many people are sooooo stuck on these types of shows. It use to crack me up to watch the Bachelor show, when a woman would not get picked... start crying and say...."but I really, really loved him"...  I am sorry, you just met him and so did 19 other women. In my opinion, it was because you lost out, didn't make the cut...  move on... Just as in these house TV shops... the flips, etc etc....  yes, they are driving me insane...  lol

Besides... we need to write more about this, so the average consumer reads this...

Jeff - Thanks for stopping by!  You are right - I need something to write about!  I would love to try and ignore it but when sellers constantly bring it up it is hard to do that.

OMG!  You nailed it!  I can't tell you how many times I have had sellers tell me they want me to do open houses so they can get multiple offers.  I ask them where they got that idea and their response is from one of those HGTV shows.  I have to reteach them that the reality shows make good TV... and that's it.  It's NOT reality!!!!!

03/14/2008 05:23 PM by David Slavin, ABR, SRES RE/MAX Grand, Katy, TX (RE/MAX Grand)

UN-Reality TV, with HGTV being Home and Garden TV, I'd guess that their gardens all grow very well, what with all the fertilizer coming from their home reality shows. The popularity of these shows will fade as time goes by, the worst thing we can do is give them too much attention.

03/25/2008 03:45 PM by Keith Vincent (Maxwell Westview Realty)

David - Yes, same thing here - they all watch it and think that is the way it is.

Keith - "their gardens all grow very well" - THAT was funny!
