Your Most Precious Gift Will be This

Sand In HourglassIn an earlier post I spoke about one of the boxes of life relating to how we spend our days. I see this in the faces and actions of those around me in the real estate world and life in general every day. I talked about giving more of a percentage of your life to the Non Urgent Yet Very Important things in your life. Surely, we have to take a big chunk of our effort to pay for those higher gasoline prices these days. But life is not about making a living. It is about a contribution. It is about a shift from success to significance. This is the reason so many people at mid life have epiphanies and go on to second or third acts in their life. From bouncer to nurse, from truck driver to real estate to nursing home volunteer. Somewhere along the way you decide you really were supposed to be a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa.

So what I have concluded is you have to understand with clarity your values. What do you REALLY believe is important in your life? In the end it should be about people and also your spirituality. With people what is the most precious gift you can give to them?

GIVE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR TIME

That is what will forever be remembered. Who the true you is and the "precious" hours and minutes of YOU that you dedicated, without distraction, to them. How do I know that is important and true? Because I have talked with many grandchildren at various ages, teenage and young adults and they all tell me how now deceased grandma or grandpa baked this pie for them or picked blueberries near the railroad tracks, or some other life imprinting memory.

Put yourself with all your focus into others lives. They will never forget you took the TIME to LOVE them!!

Gary, we are on the same page on our post I see.  With a friend just passing away it has really put in to perspective what is really important.

Gary, I always anticipate your next post and expect from you to unfold another of your limitless wisdom. What you just said about your grandchildren is so true. Every memory I have from my childhood gravitates around my grandfather. He was the light of my childhood and I keep fresh memories about every minute spent with him. He was loving, funny, generous, wise and entertaining... my best friend and I still feel him around as yesterday. Indeed he gave me the precious gift of love.

Wow!  How appropriate for me who thinks working harder and longer hours is required in real estate these days.  You are so right...........it's all about TIME!  In the end that's all we ever had TIME to do what we choose and TIME to portion out to family, friends, career and TIME for ourselves.  Great Post!!  Thank you.

Marchel: The loss of a close friend can definitely make one think about what is truly important. I wish you well in this time.

Donna: I think focusing on others with sincerity does more for us when we think it is all about them.

Arina: When we are little we seem to be all ears to our grandparents because they raised our parents and so often the grandparents have great perspective and natural wisdom. I'm glad for you that your grandfather meant so much for you and gave you great memories. See, he's one of the those examples I'm using for the rest of us to learn from : )

Hassan: Thank you. I just write down what pops in my head for the day.

Diane: I think working hard is good. It drives success. But what all of us wonder at some point, is there more than just the hamster wheel? The answer is yes, and "part" of your time needs to focus in that area.I think we just have to cut back on some of the career time for the Non Urgent Very Important stuff.

Gary - I have been mulling this over quite a bit in the last few months.  This is a terrific reminder for all of us.  I have some very strong memories of my grandparents and my mom spending special time with me when I was a kid.

Gary, I often think of my old jobs that would never allow me to leave work early to see one of my childrens games...and often regret it; time is precious.

Gary:

I've found myself being called into question by fellow Realtors, friends and family members that wonder why I am volunteering my time with 1) my local Realtor association's education committee, 2) teaching free classes to new agents within my Brokerage and 3) giving my time to my HOA.  They all want to know why I would do that when I only make money selling real estate.  I see it this way:  The more you give, the more you receive.  It all has a way of working out.  And since volunteering my time, I have found a real purpose to other area's of my real estate career (education) and found the value in my free time.  Furthermore, my business is doing better than ever.
