Vincent Van Gogh * Self Worth Eludes A Master * Living Spaces Design

A meticulous, industrious man; prolific and proficient artist, he was never good enough - as hard as he tried, his writings indicate a compulsion to deride his own work, hoping for the elusive stage of one day 'getting good enough'.

I have reflected over the years that often, it isn't necessarily those most talented who achieve success. The most successful may have only a fraction of the talent, but they believe in it, right - OR WRONG.

I have noticed in my associations, very successful people who believe without question their own 'brilliance'. In fact the knowledge and capacity may be poor, substandard, and clearly flawed. It has caused me to wonder how far belief is carried. Can blind belief in oneself also cause others to believe that way also, overlooking otherwise glaring flaws?

(The famous 'Irises' series was painted while in assylum at Saint Remy. The master's vast body of work over 1000 drawings & 600 paintings was largely created the last three years of his life)

One complex I staged had 24" inner doorways. I had to get the delivery guys to remove the millwork to get the sofas through. The builder, clearly cutting corners (while brilliant in certain areas, lacks as a designer) came along and blasted me. I blasted him back, telling him his doorway was too small and that we'd replace the millwork.

This same complex and others, while sound, typically were fraught with poor and patchy planning. The units once staged, were purchased by intelligent wealthy people who apparently overlooked the many flaws!

Of many self portraits, this one is my favorite. It appears most naturally revealing. I believe it was either during or after his time in assylum at Saint Remy. This one does not reveal an artist painting himself as the others do, but his essence & vulnerable innocence.

Then you have a poor talented man like Van Gogh who was very possibly right on the brink of success. Or would he have continued to undermine his success? Clearly the man did have some medical/neurological problems, which modern professionals have tried to diagnose.

No matter. The point is people like Van Gogh are among us. They are rarely understood 'eccentrics'. We can even relate if we're honest to some of Van Gogh in ourselves - both the brilliance  and the insecurity.

One almost feels they know Van Gogh, through his work, his history, and the remarkable legacy of his writing and letters.

Would he have succeeded? The fact - it is what it is.

My studies of this master of his art cause me to marvel and appreciate the struggle some have in believing in themselves. It leads me to want to honor, encourage & support the point of talent wherever I see it. There is every reason to honor the purity of light in ourselves and all others.

Deborah, you make a very good point.  However, those that are the most successful while alive, tend to be, at least to me, the most difficult to live with.  Their pomposity sometimes overshadows their success.  Then there are those that "stumbled" into great success and carry their humility with them throughout their lives.  I think the great masters were all insecure, always striving to do better, and in doing so continued to improve on their work.  I know my uncle was always the first to criticize his work.  He never felt it was good, but carried on.  Now he is nationally recognized, which fortunately for him happened during his lifetime.  But, even that wasn't a good enough seal of approval for him.

Deborah, I recently read a quote by Van Gogh of something he had said regarding his paintings, I wish I had saved it.  His works to me, are timeless and I can get lost in some of his paintings.

Wow Deborah, I have always felt such emotion when viewing Van Gogh's work. My thoughts have been that there was such pain in his self portrait. Now for myself, when gazing at a Chagall painting I'm always left with a fun spirit.

I like to play at painting so I appreciate your post!

Wow, this was an excellent post.  I appreciated the way in which you used the story of a brilliant, but troubled artist to underscore that there is brilliance in all of us.  If we stop focusing on our flaws, it's likely that others will too and allow us to bring the gifts we would like to share into their lives.

Hi Deborah - I bring this discussion back to The Secret:  "Energy flows where attention goes".

Excellent post!

That just makes me think that I need to believe in my abilities, no matter what that may be, even more.  Perception is 9/10th of reality.  Good thing Van Gogh got the other 1/10th, even if it was after his death, huh?  I am not as familiar with his paintings as I would like to be, but I like what I have seen.

Terry - we are certainly all kinds - those carrying their humilty are the ones I appreciate most as well. Many artists have been and are pioneers, creating something new, which they feel insecure about in terms of acceptance and quality.

Your uncle's art is amazing - what a remarkable legacy you are related to girl!

Carole, among his many letters to his brother, Van Gogh repeatedly revealed his angst over his work hopefully getting good enough to sell one day. The poor man needed healing, yet his paintings, and those  of many artists speaks to us of remarkably in emotive awe and beauty - healing to us.

Thanks for commenting Cynthia. I like Chagall as well, but not a particular favorite - the one you noted as a favorite - certain pieces of his are very emotive!! Love that. What kind of painting do you do? perhaps you can upload some in a post for us to see?

Yes Marzena, people can be stuck in energy patterns. Unfortunately poor Vincent needed more than was obviously available to him or capable of, as many today.

Thank You Lola I appreciate your insightful additional thoughts - our attention really does need to be on the brilliance around and in each. Thanks also for the feature!

Marlene, yes - believe! There is little benefit to focusing on the flaws and failings except to use them as a guide to hone to get us in the right direction. Poor Vincent is a huge success - if only he knew!

Hello again Deborah,  Oh my, I only play at painting for myself right now.

On another note, I absolutely loveyour website! I was trying to find more of your pottery works. Did I miss the link on your site? I'm quite impressed with the piece you have uploaded in place of your picture, it's beautiful and I'm sure the glaze is even more spectacular in person. I do have a great love of pottery.

I live in a small town filled to the brim w/ other artists and there is raku potter in an old tannery down the street from me. How lucky am I?

Gita - Thank You for commenting - Van Gogh's story is a sad one indeed, such a brilliant talent, unsuccessful in his own, yet gaining ever in popularity as time passes. Not only is his legacy remarkable, his story remains a learning and lesson for us all.

Hello Cynthia - always great to hear from people enthusiastic about art! I actually only have few uploaded on my site, as I am not currently producing. One day again!

You are sooo lucky - I will have to check your into location - you should post on the artists in your area - it could help them - and is interesting material. Great for you also to post to various groups and to localism also - great web exposure and getting acquainted.

Here's a post link I did http://activerain.com/blogsview/259569/Raku-Art-you-asked
