i see some people have multiple entries that look like spam to me in some cases.
is there a trick to getting on the front page?

To get a featured post, you have to write something that somene likes enough to nominate for a feature. If you click the red flag at the bottom of the blog content, you can report them for a feature, plagarism, etc.

There should be a tag on the sidebar for featured. He has written about what gets looked for when considering featured posts.
