Mapping is becoming essential to finding the homes you are interested in. When moving to an area you need the visual reassurance of the home locations. You don't know the area so you have no way to know what area a subdivision is in. Look for an MLS search that offers a mapping tool!
Schools are very important to the purchase of your home - even if you don't have children. It will affect you now and it will effect the resale value of your home. You should be able to toggle from your MLS search to a tool that tells you more about area schools.
Lots of pictures. Many of the homes on Realtor.com and other sites only have one picture. It is hard to tell much about a home with no or only one picture.
Last you need a Realtor to help guide you through what you are seeing. There is usually a reason why a home is a "good deal". A good Realtor can keep you from making buying a "good deal" that turns into a "nightmare".
