As John Maxwell has brought to life in his book, "The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player", preparation can be a key for us in the real estate business;

Preparation Begins with:

1. Assessment:  You must know what you are preparing for. Where are you and/or your team headed?  You will need to examine the conditions along the way and determine what price you will have to pay to get there. If you don't, you will be unable to prepare yourself properly.

2. Alignment:  Although you may know where you want to go, you'll never get to your desired destination if you're not lined up right. Good alignment makes your success possible...just look at your golf game. You can't just work hard, you have to do the right work.

3. Attitude:  Lazy people rarely prepare. Diligent people do, but some can overlook an area that can trip them up when they meet a challenge: they neglect their attitude. You must have a positive attitude about yourself, your teammates and your situation.

4. Action:  Ultimately you have to take action. Being prepared means ready to take that first step when the time comes. Courage has no greater ally than preparation, and fear has no greater enemy.

Become a process thinker: Getting ready is the secret of success. Create a system or list for yourself that will help you mentally walk through any process ahead of time, breaking tasks down into steps.

Do more research: Make yourself an expert in your field; know your stats, know your market; know your competition!

Learn from your mistakes: Watch the tapes... The greatest preparation tool can often be a person's own experience. Think about the mistakes you recently made while completing a project or challenge. Write them down, study them, and determine what you can do differently the next time you face a similar situation.

Practice, practice, practice.... Watch for the upcoming post, "Quadrant Your Time"..

Thanks Don! I love John Maxwell. I read his Leadership Bible. It is amazing how much Biblical basis there is business. If you will do business the way the Bible talks about... you are sure to succeed!

To your success,

Susan

Don: Thank you for the great advice in this post. I started systematizing several years back. What a blessing. Now I'm working on rehearsing answers to common objections and questions. Also practicing my buyer presentation. I had a listing presentation for years that is very detailed but only recently developed a system for buyers. I've learned a lot from my mistakes, maybe more than from successes in some cases. I can't exactly say I look forward to the next mistake so I can learn from it, but almost. Inevitably I know more mistakes are to come. Thank you for all your sharing.

Preparation is the backbone of business. You cannot succeed for very long and perform consistently if you are not prepared to deal with your customers and the challenges that will arise.

Matt:  It would be nice to think that we were permanently polished, but there is always room for improvement!  I'm interested in your Buyer System... Something I haven't completed yet, myself. Thanks again!

Steve:  Absolutely right Steve!  The target is always moving & so our preparation must be as well! Thanks for reading!
