The south side of the building gets the worst weather.

Here in Sacramento, we find that the greatest amount of weather damage is found on the south side of the building. This side of the building gets the most sun which damages the material on that side. Because of the sun beating on this side, it is more likely to get water damage, dry rot, peeling paint and all sorts of things that will require regular maintenance.

Each of the 6 doors and frames in the photo are in need of replacement. The water damage and dry rot has gotten to the point that it can no longer be repaired. Regular maintenance would have prevented this costly repair.

When doing your regular maintenance inspections, be sure to pay particular attention to the south side of the building; it gets the most damage. A little bit of prevention will go a long way in maintaining your home.  If you are not sure what to look for, contact a local contractor qualified in spotting areas in need of attention.

That's interesting.  I never really thought about that before.  I wonder if the same is true here, but it doesn't seem like it is due to weather patterns here.

Wow, physics and weather work together!  Who knew!  People often ask me how often a house needs to be painted.  My answer is that depends on which side they are referring to!

Good morning Tom. Yep the sunny side of the house is seldom sunny when it comes to maintenance. Enjoy the day.

Debbie - The best way to tell is to see which side of your home gets the most direct sunlight.

Roger - This usually first appears as painting issue. Peeling, fading paint tends to happen first; once the paint has failed, the wood is unprotected.
