A CHILD'S TEARS AT A CLOSING

Tears

Last week I was at a closing with my client's who were closing on one home and then closing on their new home later that same day.  The entire family was which included the client's two children who are 8 and 12.  To all of us adults, what we were doing was simply going through the motions of getting everything signed.

I noticed that the young girl was sitting quietly with tears streaming down her face.  When her mother noticed, the girl burst out crying that she was so sad about moving.  It was so moving.

Change comes and goes in our lives and it is easy to forget that these changes profoundly affect our children.  Seeing this little girls tears was such a great reminder that what we do in this job affects people in so many different ways.  Moving from a childhood home and into a new home and neighborhood can be quite daunting to anyone.

May we all never get too caught up in a transaction to remember the emotional side of what we do.  I am praying that this dear child was able to accept the change and is happy in her new home and school today!

A child's tears at this closing will stick with me as another reason to always keep this job about the people and never about the transaction!

Such a touching story Paula, I am sure that she will adjust with time and share in her parents joy in a new home.

I remember at the age of 10 trying to cover the For Sale sign with mud when my parents were moving from my lifelong home.  Of course, everything turned out fine and my "lifetime" friends are from where we moved to.  But as a youngster it can be a huge deal, especially the older they are.

That's sweet. Bittersweet perhaps. She'll wind up loving her new home, too!

How so very sad.... I remember when it happened to me as a ten year old. We moved from Luling, my small town home to Houston.... so big and with so many mean children. I hope it goes better for this sweet child.

I have always tried to be very sensitive when performing an inspection if the owner are present. Death of a spouse, loss of a job, not all moves are to be looked forward to. Even those that are eagerly anticipated are still stressful and feeling are often mixed or simply raw. Tread with caution and compassion.

This really is important Paula. I can remember my parents deciding to move across the country when I was 12 and how I really didn't get a say in the matter. Friends, school, home, were all going to be different in a short time.

Great post today!

Paula moving can be harder on the children, and parents do need to keep that in mind.

Awwww, that's awesome! What she doesn't realize at her young age is that she is going to meet new people and have amazing experiences! My youngest son was small, he cried when we traded in the car for a new one...lol

Moves can be a happy time, but also sad to let memories go. When we sold our house, which my kids basically have lived in most of their life, it was difficult. When we found out the new owner had cut down the one big tree in the yard, it made my kids very upset, because they had fun climbing that tree and playing in its shade. I hope your seller's kids get adjusted quickly and have no more tears.

Paula, You are so right. Moves impact everyone. It's an emotional time for all. The range of emotions seems to be endless. Children and the elderly seem to be impacted the most. It's hard for elderly to leave their home of so many years and so many memories.  We must always be mindful and support our clients all through the transaction and beyond.

Paula that is beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

We are in the process of moving and have one son at home still, 16.  We were going to wait but he wants to move, start fresh. Being that he's personally struggling with making better choices for friends, grades, and well, community, he sees this move to Austin as a new beginning.

I think when we make some of the choices and go through some of the experiences that our clients do, we remember this is not just a profession, but like you said, it's about lives.

Hi Paula,

This was such an inspirational post and very perceptive that you realized how happy she could be but also so sad to be leaving her other home and probably the one she had grown up in for the past 10 years. Moving is stressful for everyone.
