A National Obsession With Organization

To organize is to declutter.

To declutter is synonymous with to simplify and simplifying is surely the path to happiness for those among us with an already over-extended existence.

As more and more businesses jump on this organizational wagon, the above message is the one they hope we receive.

Are you aware that The Container Store boasts 63 locations nationwide?

Did you know that a Marshalls' dressing room requires that we immediately make a choice between Definitely, Possibly, and Tomorrow? Jill Sackler, NYS RE Agent, SRES

When Gmail came out with their new email categories: Primary, Social & Promotions, I didn't like them. Now that it's been a few weeks, I'm used to the change but, still feel it was unecessary.

All Gmail has afforded me is the opportunity to ignore the mail I don't feel like opening immediately. When those pesky promotions were right in front of my face, I had no choice but to deal with them. I can be a bit compulsive and any task left unaddressed tugs at me. Now that this unwanted correspondence is hidden away, I can ignore it indefinitely. Progress? Any minute now, a feeling of peace and serenity should carry me away.

Does America's new obsession with organization strike anyone else as odd? Are we seriously unable to get through our day without the help of these silly pre-made labels or did what started as a good and helpful idea initially, once again, spiral to extreme?

To be clear - I'm not advocating clutter and confusion. It's just that I refuse to believe chaos is the only available option; that we're destined for failure without additional help.

Rebellious by nature, regardless of what's pictured, the bathing suit hung under "definitely"  never made it out of the store. Luckily, I found one I could live with on another Marshall's shopping spree.

Leanne - Really well said! They don't seem to take into account that there are those of us who already have a system for decision making.

I target a lot of people that are down sizing and we find they still like to keep all the stuff they have, I had a 75 year old who had his notes from college history class. In my team we havea professional organizer on call to help them make these decessions.

It's getting to the point where organizing things and putting them in the 'proper places' is taking more time and energy than a more relaxed approach. I've seriously lost things due to over organizing and then not being able to find out where I stuck it...

I like to be free and that means not to many rules. Sometimes living out of chaos can be beneficial until it starts to become unbearable, than organise.

Jack - ha! that's a funny example. My husband had his boyscout uniform for the longest time.

Christine - I'm also a fan of the relaxed approach. That's happened to me also. I thought I was so smart and 2 steps ahead of myself when I put something away in what I thought would be the proper place and then I couldn't find it.

Hi Jimmy - Free and not too many rules - love it!

Wayne & Jean - I've often said that myself. I'm not sure how I feel about something yet. I need time to figure it out.

Michael - Organized to the point where it makes sense to you is the take-away.

The price ranges a real estate market holds dictates how many extra layers of this or that paid for services are needed, warranted, put into play.

Funny how America has gone down the road of over consumption and then when the economy turned it was fashionable to simplify and organize.

When I show homes to some of my clients, they can't believe how much STUFF people have. It seems to fill their basements, spare rooms, garages. To show my home I had to get a storage space. Then I wish I had left everything in the storage space when we moved. But we brought it to our new home and threw most of it away. I wish we could have done that initially.

Hey Jill - interesting blog post. I hadn't really thought about it - but now that you mention it? I do agree with you. I'd rather do my own organizing...

I haven't been in a dressing room with the labels - that would be annoying.

I think that it's funny & witty personally. Makes you make a decision on what you are trying on.

I don't think we are overorganized as a society. I see that everyday when I go into clients cluttered houses that takes them a month to straighten out.

We are 'consumed by comsuming' maybe. Always have to have the newest, bestest, brand new & then don't use it fully.  IPhone's are the perfect examples - I have more friends that don't know how to use the darn things but let's all pay $500 for them.

Jill, thank you for detailing yet another thing we can all get obsessed with. I don't know if we just need something to obsess over or if we are seeing opportunities that we didn't see before. Maybe it's part of the "mile a minute" mentality, where, because everything is sort out for us, we can jump on the most important ASAP without having to waste time on those that aren't as important. It creates a more efficient approach, if anything.

Gary - and yet, you balance each other perfectly.

Andrew - interesting. I hadn't looked at it from that angle.

Kim - They say everything is cyclical.

Ed and Tracy - Thanks for stopping by.

Michael - food for thought...

Dana - I learned that it's really hard to throw your own stuff away. Have a trusted friend/family member tell you if it's of any value.

Debb - Could it be they haven't come out across the country yet?

Lyn - Consumed by consuming, for sure. That's why we need this great new organizing service.

Phil - It is what it is. Just a sign of the times.

It's good to declutter and be more organized.  Going paperless is helpful and is much less stressful to me than seeing mounds of client papers and files.

Sounds like you may be rebelling against the organization craze, I try but never succeed at being as organized as I probably should be.
