Reality TV Versus Real Life Real Estate Agents

By
Real Estate Agent with Online Real Estate Agent Training

Reality TV Versus Real Life Real Estate AgentsLet me start off by saying that I am not a huge fan of reality television.  Why?  Because it just doesn't seem "real" to me.  You see, thankfully I don't have any fighting family members or girlfriends who stab me in the back whenever they get the chance.

It Takes Longer Than 60 Minutes

But of all the reality shows, I think I dislike the shows about real estate agents the most.  In my opinion, these shows make light of what we do for a living and give consumers...buyers and sellers alike, a false sense of the buying and selling process.  Most of these shows are completely unrealistic.  Who among us wished that we could show every client 3 houses and they select one that very day?  They not only make their selection, but do everything in between (negotiate, home inspection, apprasial, etc) and settle within minutes.  Okay, more like 60 minutes.  But still, how fantastic would that be?

That Would Never Happen

The few times I've tuned in (and I do mean few), I saw a seller take the phone from the listing agent to speak with the buyer.  The seller proceeded to yell at the buyer and tell them what a terrible offer they submitted. Really???  What listing agent would allow such a thing to happen?  None that I know of.  And to be completely honest, I was on one of those shows many years ago.  I thought it might be a good way to pick up business.  Not only did I not get any business from my appearance on the show, it took an entire day to film it.  I would have picked up more business by doing my usual prospecting.

Educate Your Clients

Real estate in the real world is a process.  There aren't any magic agents or clients.  It is a series of serious negotiations.  Real estate agents often have to show their buyers dozens of homes before they decide on the one that best fits their needs.  And after finding the right house they must go through a home inspection, termite inspection and an appraisal.  Sellers and buyers rarely get to talk to one another before settlement.  Because of reality TV, we as real estate agents must now do an even better job of educating our clients on the home buying and selling process, otherwise they may feel we aren't doing our jobs if we don't get their house sold in 60 minutes or less.

I think it's fun to watch those real estate reality shows.  They make me laugh.  I've had a couple of buyers that thought they were on a reality show.  That didn't make me laugh.

This is so true and thank you for the blog post. The "magic" of television is just that - a magic trick. Nothing more. I agree with Amanda and Jared #28 - you gotta laugh!

I love the reality shows too about how easy it is to sell real estate!  They crack me up.  I remember this one where the wall of the house looked like it was going to collapse.  I said to the people I was watching it with, "don't they see that"?   "Is that an opitcal illusion"?    Later in the show, the "home inspector" after inspecting the entire house and talking to the buyers outside, suddenly notices it - where was he during the rest of the inspection, not really sure?   It became an issue, was negotiated and everyone happy.   The point?   Really, if i can see it on TV....what was the agent and the buyer thinking (and the producers - or was that the drama).

If people think those shows are real life, they probably think that Judge Judy is how courts work in real life too.

When I see some of these reality real estate shows, my initial reaction is that we need to make new agents watch so they know what NOT to do!

Candy, there is nothing real about reality TV. Every show is the same. The Husband and Wife never agree on anything. And they always end up justifying the very things they didn't like about the house after their purchase.

I feel like I could write a truer show, but it would involve drunk sellers in their underwear, divorcing spouses fighting over a park bench and a buyer couple in a screaming "f-you" fight in my car.  This would be reality!

I think most people know that any "reality" tv show is just for entertainment purposes, although there is that segment that believes everything on TV.  I have watched some of the shows where the clients have to pick 1 of 3 houses, and find them interesting because you get to see prices/house options in other areas of the country.  But other than that, they're just entertainment.

Hi Candy....Congratulations on your feature. Many moons ago I did sell a New home in less than 60 minutes, I can't imagine now adays selling a home to my Buyer in 60 minutes, We have just to many things to do. This Friday I have Buyer coming from out of town(referral) for her first Look at possible homes for her. We have already put in several hours on the phone and viewing possible homes online. She wants to just to see what her money will Buy her. We'll be looking at 5-6 homes and it'll take us about 2 hours just viewing the homes. Then we'll site down for lunch or coffee and discuss our investigation, She'll Head home to list her house or continue her search with the automated listings I Send her...60 minutes..ha. This is a short story on my time with this buyer and the agent who referred her so far. It's process, we could write a book on each sale.

I have to admit I cannot stop watching reality TV.  Don't know why, just love it.  Even though I know most of it planned and bogus.

Hollywood, so called "Reality TV" have caused many average consumers to make mistakes, develop huge misconceptions. A good friend owns and operates a mini storage and that program has lead to huge mess for him everytime he has to take a unit back and auction the contents, He says it far from reality. It's TV not reality!

Reality TV ugh!!! The funny thing is they wrap up in one 60 minute episode what would really take them a whole season, but it wouldn't make for exciting TV at all.

Nice post Candy! Show business will always sensationalize and streamline the most mundain of processes to make them exciting. Even though our works helps families and can be very emotional, many day-to-day tasks wouldn't be considered exciting enough for these shows, nor would people take the time for a multi part episode to see how the home buying experience turns out.

Candy, I watch HGTV while I eat my lunch. Today the buyer's agent said, I told the listing agent $400,000 was our max. This was before she'd even discussed an offer with her clients. BTW, the list price was $400,000. No wonder so many buyers think we're idiots.

I'm not a fan of those shows either. I always tell my clients not to worry, that I won't be taking them room to room telling them what each room is. I'm pretty sure they already know. :)
