Have You Re-registered Yet For Your 2014 NYS STAR Exemption?

Jennifer - STAR is a great help to homeowners.  Trying to get the word out there to as many homeowners as possible so that they don't loose the benefit.

Debbie - No choice.  I think its because there has been a lot of misuse of STAR by those not rightfully eligible and they need to clean up the system.  Check the link again.  It worked for me.

Nick, according to wikipedia "The homestead exemption is a legal regime designed to protect the value of the homes of residents from property taxes, creditors, and circumstances arising from the death of the homeowner spouse". 

The STAR exemption is a yearly school tax assessment reduction that every homeowner who earns less than  $500,000 (combined income with spouse) and who's home is their primary residence qualifies for provided thay apply for it.  Once you've applied, you automatically get the deduction each year.  However this year they are requiring re-registration in order to continue to be eligible for the deduction.  Failure to re-apply will disqualify you from receiving the deduction in 2014.

This has nothing to do witht the death of the homeowner or spouse.  Though I'm not familiar with the homestead exemption, it doesn't sound like it resembles it  in any way.

Pat - Thanks.  I've started calling past customers just to remind them to re-register and have been surprised by just how many are unaware that they have to.  It's a great way keep me top of mind, while I perform a much needed service for them.
