A few years ago I read an article about Freecycle. It intrigued me because it was a place where everyone gave things away. And if things are free, then I'm all about checking them out.
According to the home website (as of 3/11/08), "The Freecycle NetworkTM is made up of 4,281 groups with 4,641,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills." I thought that this was a great philosophy! And I also felt as if I was missing out by not being apart of it yet. When I signed up, the local chapter had a few members, but there wasn't very much activity. So I just phased it out of my routine and just forgot about them for a little while. I did have them in my favorites list, and while I was cleaning that up about 6 months back I came across the website again and thought I'd see how it was going. I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the activity! There have been all sorts of things given away -- beds, treadmills, all sorts of baby things, furniture, computers, phones, plants, appliances, books, clothes, and a whole lot more. There are only two rules to the group. You can offer something for free or you can ask for something for free. Absolutely no for sale items are allowed. They don't like you to try to barter, either. It's really important to not be just a taker as well. If you're part of the group, you should be willing to help someone else by offering something that you have and no longer need, in addition to taking something off of another member's hands. It's a wonderful community with tons of great members, especially in the Charleston group! And I find that the more I participate, the more rewarding it is to help out others. |
This is great! Thanks, I am going to check it out!
