Perfecting My Elevator SpeechElevator Speech

In mid-August I wrote a blog post, Not a Big Fan of Scripts...with One Exception. I do believe that one must be ready at all times with an introduction, their elevator speech, if you will.

After 10+ years in the RE business, Rich and I are focusing on a new niche market. Well, new to us. Rich got his SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist) designation and CSHP (Certified Senior Housing Professional) designation and I am working on my CSHP.

With our new focus, we need an updated elevator speech. I've made a few revisions since last month and I'm happy with the end result. Please share your thoughts. (By the way, this was very effective at our Chamber luncheon today. I had 2 members ask for my business cards because we could be potential power partners!)

"Hi, I'm Donna Foerster with Rocky Mountain Real Estate Advisors and The Foerster Team. I partner with my husband, Rich. We are Senior Housing Professionals, servicing the population that is living and aging well in Douglas and the surrounding counties. We want to be more than Realtors, we want to be a resource to Seniors."

When meeting with other professionals at Chamber, Rotary, or other events we will add, "and we want to partner with other professionals who service this same population."

Donna (and Rich), you have perfectly stated who you are and what you do.  Short and to the point.  The experts say that is the way to do it.  Good luck.

Donna - Sounds great.  I would delete "and surrounding counties."  just a waste of words and sort of goes without saying, but by saying it, it sounds like you're not focused.

Donna - nice job!! I would suggest also that you consolide what you wrote about partnering with your husband. I don't think you really need that as part of your elevator speech. People who you're meeting really just want to know what you can do for them, not who you do it with.

Scott~ We're working on it. We are getting involved in different groups and organizations that support the population of Baby Boomers and beyond!~

Thank you Jean. I had good feedback from some of the folks at today's Chamber event, so I guess I did ok!

Debbie G.~ Hmm, I struggle with being either too specific or too general. Thanks for the feedback!

Renae~ You don't think I need to say that they are getting 2 agents to take care of their needs?

Thanks for the feedback Ginger!

Thanks Donna, and elevator speech may be the most important thing that we say when starting a relationship, if not done right, the relationship may never get started.

Thanks for sharing yours!

Donna, well done!  Keep using it just as it is.  When it doesn't work anymore then it is time to revise.  Thanks for sharing yours.  Now I need to work on mine I guess.

It's a good niche to start building. More and more boomers are turning into Seniors.  And, I am in total agreement regarding scripts. I do however, always have a general outline in mind when meeting with buyers or sellers.  Fortunately, it helps keep the interview process moving forward to reveal more and more information about "them."  As for the elevator speech - sounds good - and agree with Dick, it's the right length.

Bob~ Great point!

Jill~ It took me some time, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Mary~ At this point I'm attending a lot of events...Chamber, Rotary, senior's councils, etc. and have to be prepared with something for the introduction and I want to be sure it sets us apart.

Debb~ We've been meeting with folks in different organizations and we're finding that the niche is growing. I want to get ahead of the curve and be ready when it really starts to "boom"!

Donna, I think you really did a nice job with this. I believe that mentioning that you partner with your husband is actually a bonus with this niche market. Of course that's coming from someone who partners with his wife!

I agree with Debbie, I would take out the "and surrounding counties" as it is implied. Besides, it will shorten it a hair! GREAT job!

I think that bringing up the fact that you partner with your husband is a conversation more suited for after you're already talking to the prospective client. Your elevator speech really should just tell the listener what you do for them. Anything else is extra and should be saved for further conversation. That's just my personal opinion. Do what you feel is best though!

I think you did a pretty good job, and if you have already handed out two business cards, it seems to be working.  I am not a scripted person at all, but you have got me thinking about creating an elevator speech for my market.

Renae~ I've got mixed feeling about it. Many of the folks that we work with appreciate that there are 2 of us, particularly male and female.

Troy~ When I gave my 30 seconds at the Chamber's Women's Forum this morning, I forgot to say that we want to be a resource. Guess it's going to take some practice!
