Just thought I would give you an update on what is happening with the fire.

The fire began near a lookout point called “Rim of the World” in the Stanislaus National Forest thus the name Rim Fire. It was discovered on August 17, 2013. Today is day 10 of smoke filled skies and sleepless nights.

The web cam at Crane Flat in Yosemite National Park shows just how smoky it is here.

Areas of Tuolumne City, Ponderosa Hills and the south side of the Highway 108 corridor (Soulsbyville to Mi-Wuk-Sugar Pine) remain under an advisory evacuation notice. The advisory has been extended to include the areas from Sierra Village to Pinecrest/Strawberry. It is precautionary at this time. For more information please contact the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office at 209-533-5815.

A Mandatory Evacuation has been issued for residences north of Old Yosemite Road (Forest Road 2S01). An Evacuation Warning has been issued for all residences north of Bull Creek Road (Forest Road 2S02), Bondurant Mine Road, Texas Hill Road, and Wampum Hill. The Mandatory Evacuation and Evacuation Warning has been issued by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office. For more information please contact the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office at: 209-966-3311.

All Tuolumne County Schools are closed for the remainder of the week.

The lines on the west of the fire (toward communities) are holding. Crews have completed dozer lines from below Tuolumne City all the way to MiWuk. There are incident strike crews stationed in all communities and areas close to the canyon ready to defend homes IF needed. The 20% containment you may have heard about is the line on the west of the fire (where the communities are). Crews are currently working on dozer lines from Sierra Village to Strawberry. These dozer lines are the width of 3 football fields. They are being very proactive in making backup defense lines should the fire jump the containment area.
Rim Fire Progression Map 8/27The map shows the fire’s size and progression. The lakes are Cherry Lake (top), Lake Eleanor and Hetch Hetchy (bottom). The purple shows how much the fire progressed from yesterday.

There are approx. 3700 men & women working this fire from all over the state and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. While the fire has grown in size, the growth has been to the North and East toward Cherry Ridge and the Emigrant Wilderness (away from us). They are doing an amazing job! It is VERY smoky here and that is likely to get worse.
