Atlanta Dogwood Festival April 4, 5, & 6, 2008

This is the 72nd year that this free Atlanta festival will be held! The name for the festival is derived from the beautiful Dogwood Trees that grace the undercanopy (they can grow in full sun) of much of the southeastern United States. Though there are a multitude of different dogwoods (HERE is a Wikipedia link which lists many varieties), most southerners and those who have taken note of these beautiful trees, are familiar with the Flowering or Eastern Dogwood! The widespread planting of these beautiful trees in and around the city of Atlanta, at the urging of Rich's Department Store founder, Walter Rich, in 1936 was an attempt to ease the blues caused by the Great Depression and the impetus for the festival's name.

Through the years the Atlanta Dogwood Festival has undergone many different incarnations. All however have included some common elements, music, parades and pageants, food, and art! Last year, 2007, more than 220 artists showcased their talents in Piedmont Park! There are organized activities for the kids! There is a wonderful Youth Art Exhibitthat features some outstanding young area artists! New this year is the Finlandia Art Bar that is for adults only and will feature high tech art in addition to cocktails, wines, and beers.

Due to the severe drought that the state of Georgia has been experiencing, Piedmont Park will not host any large festivals this year so the Atlanta Dogwood Festival has temporarily found a new home. This year the festival will be held at the forecourt, facing Peachtree Street, of Lenox Square in the Buckhead Area. This temporary location can easily handle the several hundred thousand visitors the festival attracts annually. As always, public transportation, called MARTA, is a safe, quick, convenient, and environmentally friendly way to get to the festival! Or, if you prefer, you can always drive and take advantage of the plentiful parking. Click HERE for festival directions and transportation options.

*The Atlanta Dogwood Festival depends on its 400+ volunteers who make the event possible! If you have the time and would like to volunteer, click HERE!*

This is a wonderful post. I didn't know that about the dogwoods, being an inspiration to lift local spirits after the Depression... very interesting. I'm not a native to the south, and enjoyed reading about this. Thanks for sharing!

Rich, I love the dogwood trees that we have here (that don't look like the one shown) and they are the first to bloom every year...I bought one for my yard because they are so pretty.  It sounds like a wonderful festival, have fun if you go!

Rich, I'm sure this is a great festival, nice of you to add the volunteer link. I love dogwoods and when we built our house, I was the girl digging them up so they wouldn't get bulldozed. They're so delicate, and our yard is full of them. Another few weeks and they'll be in bloom.

Greetings from the North Georgia Mountains!

Rich: I have lived many places in my life and Spring is more beautiful in Atlanta than anywhere else I have ever seen. Between the dogwoods, redbuds, azaleas, tulips, daffodils, flowering fruit trees, Atlanta is ariot with color.

Jeremy - It is warming up nicely, though we did have a recent brief cold snap with snow flurries and all, so a trip to Atlanta at the beginning of April for the festival might be a fun weekend getaway!

Mara - I am not a native either but I was an early transplant so I was raised in the south. It is a great example of the beauty of nature being used to cheer one up.

Carole - They are quite beautiful but ironically, the most plentiful in the south, have no scent! They are also quite popular in a pink shade! What does yours look like? Do you have any photos you would be willing to share?

Linda - They are very beautiful! My sister planted a dwarf variety years ago in her front bed and it just adds to the colors of spring!

Debbie - Volunteers make it possible so I thought it was important to add the link. You are right, these are very delicate trees! They are very difficult to transplant successfully. They should be blooming here very soon!

Kim - I am in total agreement! There is nothing quite like Atlanta in the spring and the mountains in the fall!

Deborah - How cool that it is your provincial flower! I never realized that they lived so far north! ANd yes, we do love our festivals; any reason to have a party or gathering!

I love this festival.  It always amazes me when they start to bloom.  I almost had a wreck yesterday, trying to pull over to get a great shot of one with my camera.

Rebecca - Unfortunately the most common dogwoods in the south have no scent but they are beautiful!

Michelle - Glad you pulled over; I am not very good at driving and photographing at the same time either <<<smile>>> It is a very fun festival and I hope you make it down from Athens!

Danny - I wanted to post this early enough to give people time to make plans if they were wanting to attend. There is of course great art and music...and because it is the south, there will be great food too!

Deborah - They are getting ready to bloom within a matter of days, a week at most. They do seem pretty widespread.

Kim - The mountains are so beautiful! Within a couple of months we will all want to be taking a dip in the cool mountain lakes, rafting on one of the beautiful waterways, or hiking one of the many trails (including the start of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain).

Just a reminder, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is this upcoming weekend! It will be a fun weekend of art and entertainment! This is a great weekend getaway opportunity if you don't live in metro-Atlanta! If you do live in the metro area, this is a great chance to see some of the best the city has to offer!

Rich: I read in today's AJC that this year's Dogwood Festival was a disappointment due to the weather and the change in venue.  I was sorry to hear that...  Hopefully, next year's event will be better.

Kim - I think that given the bad weather on Friday and the cool, overcast Saturday, coupled with the change in venue, it did okay. I think that any outdoor festival venue would have a difficult time competing with Piedmont Park...hopefully the drought will end soon and next year the festivals can be back in there usual home.

Greetings from the North Georgia Mountains!
Rich:  Yes, let's pray that we're on the downwind leg of the drought, for more reasons than the Dogwood Festival!  I don't want to have to take up arms against my Tennessee neighbors!

I totally agree! I don't know who came up with the idea of...oh the border with Tennessee was surveyed wrong so now we are going to appropriate x amount of acres that just so happen to have ample water access! If it does come down to it, would we use water guns???Maybe a  supersoaker!
