5 Reasons to Eat Mint!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Platinum

Sure, mint is delicious in cocktails, but this fragrant herb also packs a powerful nutritious punch as well.  Freshen your meals and snacks with these mint tips:

1.  Research shows that peppermint tea extract can destroy the bacteria that cause infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis and walking pneumonia.  To brew up these benefits, place a handful of mint leaves in a teapot and gently muddle with the back of a spoon.  Fill the pot with hot water, let steep for 5 minutes, and add honey to taste.

2.  For a sweet twist on caprese salad, swap basil for mint and tomatoes for sweet peaches.  Layer with fresh mozzarella and enjoy!

3.  Modify your next pesto by pureeing a handful of fresh mint and another of fresh cilantro with 2 TB of lime juice, 2 garlic cloves, 1/3 cup olive oil and a dash of sea salt.  Serve with pasta or on crostini.

4.  Start your day with a mojito smoothie.  Blend 1/2 cup mint leaves with a frozen banana, juice of 1/2 lime, 1/2 coconut water, 1/4 avocado, and 1 TB of honey.  You will get nearly 4 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber!

5.  There is more than one reason to finish a meal with mint.  Peppermint can soothe stomach discomfort by relaxing muscles in the digestive tract.

Hi Kristin,  My neice's name is Kristin Johnston from Orange County California.  I enjoyed your mint blog. Bristol, Indiana just south of here about 20 miles used to be the mint capital.  Now it grows wild and you can smell it as you drive in the area.

Good Morning Kristin,  Growing up in Pennsylvania, my grandmother had so much mint planted it was unreal.  My parents even had mint tea growing wild that me use to pick all the time to make ice tea.

Kristin, it's posts like these that I find deliciously informative! I have to bookmark. I have always naturally leaned towards mint and ginger, two foods that are good for the digestive tract. Aloe vera juice is, too, although not yummy like the first two! (Maybe throw a bit into that daily mojito smoothie).

I use peppermint oil drops for stomach discomfort, Kristin, you just swirl it in a glass of water. Works great. I love the peach caprese salad and will try it out. Thanks for the idea.
