big horse

This is Noddy.  Noddy is a 5 year old Victorian Shire gelding.  He stands 20.1 hands high.  That's 81 inches for those of you that don't know what a hand is.  (Horses are measured in hands and a hand equals 4".)  He is unofficially the biggest horse around.  His full name is Luscombe Nordrum and currently resides in Australia.

He will be shown at the Royal Agricultural Show, which runs from March 12 - 15, where more than 1300 horses are expected to attend the horse show.  He will be featured in the Breeds of the World showcase.

The owners are not currently sure what job he would be well suited for.

I've ridden an 18 hand horse, and that was quite big.  Anyone that has ridden a horse knows that even 16 hands is quite tall for a horse.  Image riding a horse over 20 hands high.  I'm sure ridng Noddy, you feel like you are defintely on top of the world.  This is a horse the Show Jumpers would absolutely die for.  All he needs to do is walk over the high fences.

Brigita,  Thank you for your post.  That is one big horse.  I can't imagine riding a horse that big.  I will save it for the professionals.

Jimmy:

It certainly is.  I can't even imagine trying to saddle a horse this tall.  It's hard enough saddling an 18 hand horse.

Thanks for the post Brigita. I did not know the whole "Hands High" thing until now. I appreciate you sharing that with us. All my best, Jim

The other thing that people don't know about Draft Horses is that they have SPRINGS in their back legs and LOVE to jump!  My Clydesdale "Princess" just hopped over a 6 foot rail from a stand in her stall!  At the time she was about 17 hands.

Brigita, that is an amazing animal.  We had horses when I was growing up.  Several were very special but that horse is something!  Thanks for letting us see this beautiful animal.

Michael & Gayle:

When my kids were showing 4H, we knew of someone that rode a Belgium and jumped her.  She went over the fences like they were nothing.  You always knew when they were in the ring, even when you weren't watching.  You heard the beat of the hooves on the ground.

I agree.  Horses are beautiful animals.  The only thing about this horse is that you need a ladder to work around him.  LOL

WOW, he is a BIG GUY!  I hope for everyone involved in his care he is a gentle giant.  I would really love to have one of his old shoes the next time he gets new ones.  If you have connections with his people let me know.  Thanks.

Jennifer:

I have seen shoes for a Clydesdale, and they are rather big.  I wouldn't be surprised if Noddy gets custom shoes.

BTW, from my experience with horses, the draft breeds tend to be very calm and gentle.

BLR Guy:

He sure is a great looking horse.  Taking care of him daily would be a good exercise routine.  Up the steps, down the steps, move the step ladder, up again and down again.  Wouldn't need a stair stepper.  LOL

I think we have come up with a great invention.  We better patent it before someone else gets credit for it.  LOL

Thank you for all your interest in my horse.  I have been overwhelmed by the attention he has received.  I'm pleased to report that everyone will have a chance to see him in November at Equitana, at Melbourne Showgrounds. - Regards, Jane Greenman, Owner/Trainer

And YES, he is that big!

Jane:

Not often do we get to see a horse that big!  I believe the biggest horse most have seen are the Budweiser Clydesdales and they are around 18+  hands.

I do hope to get to see Noddy at some point.

Thank you for commenting.  Enjoy your gentle giant!

Sabrina:

I have worked with 18 hand horses and I was barely able to reach their backs.  With a 20 hand horse, definitely need to use a step ladder.
