Don't Tear Someone Down to Build Yourself Up.
I would like to have your business
I really shut down when this happens and it happened again this morning. A landscape vendor saw my sign in front of one of my listings. He calls and says he drove by and saw that the yard looked bad and whoever had cut it did a really poor job. He said he could do a whole lot better and wondered if I would hire him. In this case I don't do the hiring  anyway because the seller is doing the yard himself and no I won't hire you either.

Pretty much what I heard was what a bad and poor job someone else had done. His being critical put me on the defensive and not receptive to hear his proposal. And I am not likely to pass his name on to the owner with the negative approach I heard.

Many real estate agents and sales people do this when they are trying to get new business. Instead of talking about their services or their skills that take a few hits at the poor job someone else did before them. This in an ineffective way to get business.

If you want to sell me something or convince me to use your services then tell me what you can do for me. Tell me how it is going to benefit me. Tell me about your skills and experience. But don't tell me someone else did a crappy job and then expect me to listen or respect you.

Don't Tear Someone Down to Build Yourself Up.

AMEN!  I've had that with auto mechanics ... The mechanic is leaning over the engine whining "The last guy did this wrong, the last guy did that wrong..."  Enough already!

Very well said Debbie. It's easy to tear somebody else down to make yourself feel better, but it doesn't work in the big picture. Love the new profile pic by the way!

This is one of life's lessons that should be learned by all in elementary school!  You never gain by stepping on another.

Debbie, excellent advice! People who step on others getting up the ladder of success usually end up falling.

Excellent picture, Debbie! I thought: who is this stranger? Post is great, as usual! Unfortunately this is a "sales" approach for many trade people. Fellow who ws waterproofing my basement went into half hour spiel about what horrible of a job someone did on that basement. Really? I bought this house, I love it with its basement and whatever else it has. If you know how to make it better - shut up and get started.

Debbie,

I would have felt the same thing, some people use it as a sales approach and dont understand that its hurts them if they would have just said that it looks like it needs to be mowed can i offer my services to you it would have been a different story.

Someone tried this on me yesterday thrashing a product to make the point. Just make your point instead. Your opinion counts

I learned many years ago to never point a finger at someone else because then I have three fingers pointing back at me.  However, when I see terrible pictures in a listing, I will point out the value of using a professional photographer as most Realtors are great at real estate, but lousy photographers.  I don't slam the person, though.  It has been said, " Great minds talk about ideas, average minds talk about things and small minds talk about people."

Debbie, making someone else would not make you look good, it will (almost) always make you look worse. It makes it seem that unless you criticize someone else, you will never get business. There's a reason you don't get business, and it's that you're not very nice.

There's better ways to say things like that, without demeaning another party.  Maybe "I noticed the lawn had recently been cut, but I'm sure it'd look a lot better if a professional landscaper, like me, could cut it with my higher end tools"

Strange way to sell yourself? Same holds thru when buyers want to buy a house & then rip it to shreads with an offer on what's wrong with it.

I'm sure if you told your seller, they would just jump at the opportunity to hire this person. I'm just being sarcastic. :)

Well deserved Feature.  Debbie, it is a very trait to feel the need to tear down another professional or tradesperson-and of course, it means that there just isn't enough good stuff to talk about! Not on our recommended resources list for sure!

Debbie, very well said! I totally agree. I get that all the time. I do the hiring for Vendors and Contractors to assist my properties, but when I hear somebody acting negative and being insultive, that turns me the other direction to find someone else! I've seen that before. The saying is, "You can always attract more Bees with honey than with Vinegar."

It never pays to speak negatively about the "perceived" competition.  Wow, it was the homeowner that was taking care of the mowing?  Ummm. yeah.  That landscaper needs to learn about tact and maybe commenting on how he could make it look better and it would benefit your seller and the home's curb appeal.  Wrong approach for sure!  Thank you for sharing.
