No Refusal Labor Day in Austin

The three-day weekend is upon us.  For many Austinites, not only does this mean an extra day off of work, but it is also a chance to bid a final farewell to summer.  If alcohol is included in your celebration plans, the police department wants you to know that they have implemented a No Refusal Labor Day in Austin.

What does this mean?  Any driver who is stopped by police between 9pm tonight, August 30th, until 5am on Tuesday, September 3rd, will have to submit to an on-site blood alcohol test (breathalyzer or blood sample) when requested by a police officer.  The current legal blood alcohol content (BAC) for drivers in Austin is under 0.08%.  However, legislators have passed stricter laws for drivers found to have a BAC of 0.15%, designating it as a Class A Misdemeanor.  With this, first time offenders will receive a fine of $4000 and up to one year in jail.

The Police Department decided to enforce a No Refusal Labor Day in Austin this weekend to keep residents and visitors of our great city safe by discouraging people to get behind the wheel when they've been drinking.  You can still have a great time without jeopardizing others.  Party responsibly.  Have a designated driver ready BEFORE you drink or call a cab to get you safely home after a night of celebrating.  Stay safe and have a great Labor Day weekend, everybody!
