Influencing the recipient's will to make the right choice for the right reason is the essence of true persuasion.  For communication to be effective, it must penetrate the recipients understanding and emotions.  For communication to be persuasive into a persons mind it must implant emotions into their hearts, and it must influence their will to embrace a belief or take an appropriate action.

You want people to make the right decision for the right reasons and feel good about it.  You don't want to manipulate people.  Yes manipulation works but only for the short terms if you want any long term relationship you must not manipulate because it could be destructive to your relationship.

True persuasion, on the other had influences people's will to receive and take ownership of a belief and motivates actions from within rather than with manipulation.  There are three major factors that motivate people to act.

They are (1) the desire for gain, (2) the fear of loss, and (3) the need to love and be loved.  When people clearly understand what you are saying and truly feel what you are feeling, if they are still not motivated to act in the way that you believe is in their best interest, you then need to focus your appeal on one or more of these three factors.  The easiest and usually the most effective appeal is to the desire of gain.

When you are trying to persuade anyone to do anything, it is critical that you focus upon what he or she will specifically gain by taking the action you are requesting.

You should know that the more you use the communication strategies, skills, and techniques that we have talked about over the course of these four articles, the more proficient you will become in using them to communicate effectively and persuasively.  Like any skill, these skills may seem difficult initially, but the more you use them, the easier they will become.  And ultimately, you will master these skills and they will become second nature to you.
