Wow - just discovered what they were actually doing at Oracle and Ina.  Looks like Bad, bad news.  When the traffic backs up a mile to make a right turn...I can just imagine the backup for a left.  I think Gab has a point here.  We're going to WISH we were in Michigan when this traffic change takes place.

On further investigation, this article shares the reasoning behind this switch.  Sounds like less accidents!  http://azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/road-runner-bids-expected-soon-for-major-redo-of-oracle/article_36716b2e-e1e7-59ab-a603-ba2af105875d.html

Straight to the point – Tucson has terrible traffic issues.  From my point of view, it stems from many problems – but the biggest being poor planning.  To give an idea of how frustrating traffic can be, to travel 10 – 12 miles can take the average person – 30-45 minutes to get from point A to B – sometimes longer if the traffic is heavy and even longer if there is road construction.

In an effort to relieve traffic congestion, Tucson over the years has implemented a variety of new “improvements” – many that I have found don’t work – they just create more problems and eventually the city “stops” it.  The way I see it, Tucson generally only fixes certain areas of roads – so if you are in that particular section of road – it might work – but the other 10 miles you have to travel to get there – is still bad.

If the city just planned and put resources into a 20 mile freeway or rail system that went from one side of town to the other – a majority of the problems would be relieved.  But they don’t.  So they continue to implement “improvements” to relieve traffic issues.  Unfortunately, it takes years to change our roads – all the while causing more construction delays and traffic jams.

The latest traffic change I have experienced at a couple small intersections – is not being able to make a left turn where you used to be able to!  Bad enough in a small intersection and now, drivers will not be able to make a left hand turn at one of the largest intersections in Tucson.  Instead, you will have to drive through to a designated light, make a u-turn, then a right and continue on your way.  It’s known as a Michigan left.

It will be interesting to see how this “improvement” will work.  Somehow, I have a feeling, it won’t.
