It's been almost a year since hurricane Sandy hit the east coast. Some people have still not been able to move back in their homes.
Actually the Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st and will last until Nov. 30th. Top forecasters predict an above-average 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, with 18 tropical storms forecast, of which nine will be hurricanes.
I went on Fema's website and got some information about assembling a hurricane supply kit and added some extra things. Also you should have a meet up place just in case family members are not together when a hurricane hits.
A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Manual can opener for food
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
- Cash
- A supply of pet food and water
- matches in a waterproof container
- A working fire extinguisher
