PuppyAbout 6 months ago, a family purchased a house on the same block as I live on. Their back yard runs with mine, with a privacy fence between. With them, came the most adorable little poodle mix puppy. He was sweet as could be, very playful, and just melted my heart everytime I saw him outside.

For the past month, this puppy has been thrown out the door and left to bark for hours. Even in 20 degree temps with 3 inches of ice on the ground. I caught a glimpse of him the other day and was shocked at his appearance. He is filthy, caked with mud, and his fur is all matted together. I was even further disturbed to see one of the young boys in the home throwing a ball at him.

Puppy I don't want to start a dispute with my neighbor, but I am finding it difficult to keep my mouth shut. It is taking alot of energy to not go to the neighbor's house, knock on the door, and say "excuse me, but if you don't want to take care of your puppy, I'd be more than happy to take care of him for you".

Oh, jump on that...I understand the neighbor thing but I hate stories like that...please, act before you are sorry that you didn't...

Lissa that is a tough spot to be in because on the one hand you don't want to cause a problem but on the other hand the dog is being mistreated.  Can you call animal control and maybe get them to come out and investigate without the neighbor knowing it was you?  Sometimes that is all it takes to get people to see what they are doing or not doing.

Lissa, it sounds like they do not want the puppy anymore and the new has worn off. Someone needs to act now, before it is too late.

Lissa, obviously the dog is neglected if it is barking for hours on end.  It could be something as simple as lack of proper exercise.  I would either approach the neighbor who owns the dog OR talk to other neighbors and see what they say.  Maybe others are worried too but not sure how to handle it.  Definately contact your local canine control officer and ask them to check on things.

I'm so sorry to hear about the puppy.  That is truly a difficult situation.  (As far as I know, all poodles when alone will back for hours on end... I have a small one).  I think the advice to contact animal control for a check is good advice.  Let us know how it goes.

Patrice: I think I'll go over and ask as soon as my husband is home to go with me.

Linda: Animal control in this town is almost useless when it comes to these things. I think I'll have to handle it somehow myslef.

Danny: I think you're right.

Jennifer: I had one neighbor ask me what was going on with the puppy. She is an elderly lady that has difficulties getting out of the house, so she couldn't check on it herself. She's a dog lover like myself but can't have one because she doesn't feel she can take care of one.

Chris: I don't mind the barking so much as the puppy being left out so long when it's so cold and it's physical appearance. It breaks my heart after listening to it bark for over 10 minutes when it's 20-30 degrees out.

To All: What do you think would be a good opening line that won't offend them?

Lissa, do you want your Baby Sister to come over and Handle them for ya?  I can ya know!  Oh, while you are at it, you can mention that their child is throwing trash on your shed.

Lissa-  THIS  IS ABUSE!!!!!   POODLES NEED GROOMING OR THEY DEVELOP SORES AND BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THEY ARE MATTED.  THEY ARE ALSO PEOPLE DOGS AND NEVER SHOULD BE YARD DOGS.  REPORT THEM OR JUST"RESCUE" THE DOG.

Stef: I think I can handle it. Maybe. If not, I'll give you a call. Thanks for the offer.

Gayle: I couldn't agree more.

Partice: I was away from the house until late last night. None of us have heard the puppy since about 7:30 yesterday morning. My daughter had to ride the bus this morning, so she's going to ask one of the boys if they still have it. If they do, my husband and I are planning to visit them tonight.

They may be happy to let you have the dog, they may just keep it and abuse it - we have seen both in the past.

Give it a try anyway and do take your husband/

Lissa- How sad! And people usually don't change, once a neglectful petowner...  I think the best way to approach it is tell them that you couldn't help but notice the change in the dog's appearance, and you were wondering if it was sick. It's very non-confrontational, and their answer will help you with the rest of the "chat". If they are hostile and defensive, you might have to drop it. If they are appreciative of your concern, you might be able to go further. You can always say "my daughter was concerned!" Good luck!

This story brought a tear to my eye.  I just love animals and the image you have painted of this little puppy's life is just horrible.  I hope you will find the nerve to do something about it.

Calling the humane society or the police would be an option.  If they took the puppy away you could help find a good family to adopt it if you didn't want the neighbor to know you were involved.

Please keep us posted.  smileys

Lissa, I hate to see animals abused!  I don't understand why people get animals if they are not going to take care of them.  That really makes me mad!  I hope you get this resolved.

To All: Sorry folks, I was in a meeting with my broker until after 9:00 last night. I did notice yesterday, however, that the puppy has been given a bath. That made me feel a little better. I have only heard him bark one time in the past 2 days, and that was only for a second or two. I don't know if it is because the weather has been much warmer the past couple of days, or not. I'll try to look into it more later today.
