9-11 What I Learned

I could not let this day pass without some remembrance of September 11, 2001.  Many speak of The FLAGwhat they remember; other will write of lost friends and family members.  Others still will recall where they were …. who among us will ever forget where we were and what we were doing.

Several years prior to that day, I remember reading an article from one of our nation’s top leaders.   In it he warned us of our complacency.

He said that waiting out there were those enemies of our country who might be poised to enter the country , perhaps in the cover of night.

You might say that was nothing new but up to that time, our wars had been fought “over there.”

So as I remember 9-11, I also hope to remember what I’ve learned…. and hopefully what our country and others have learned as well.

1. We cannot take our lives or ourselves for granted….ever.

2. As much as we love our country and our lifestyle, we cannot become so arrogant, ignorant or obtuse that we think we are the center of that universe.

3. Like all of our families with our  grumpy Uncle George, crazy Aunt Millie and  “are you sure he’s part of our family” cousin Harry….. in the end, when times and circumstances call for it, we come together as a family and from that strength we stand against all forces.

4. I love this country and the people that live in it and for it.

Be Thankful for What We Have

and

Never Forget

Kathy, what an awesome tribute. We can't take what we have and our freedom for granted. So many have given up so much for us. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND IT'S PEOPLE as well and so blessed to live in the US. Suggested!

Kathy-We take a lot for granted in this country and if because of that day we don't now then that is a good thing. Great tribute.

Should we never forget or should we really find out why 9-11 happened and who was behind it. I lost too many people not to forget, but I would like to know who was really behind 9 - 11. The story is to bizzare even for a dumb downed American society.Look at what has happened since 9 - 11.

Beautifully said, Kathy!  It's such an emotional day.  My brother was in New York at the time of the attack and I will never forget the relief I felt when I finally got the call that he was ok.  So many people were not so lucky and I cannot imagine their pain.  I had an appointment in Boston today and I couldn't help but feel a bit anxious that something could happen.  We never know when they will strike again.

Kathy, September 11, 2001 was a wake up call for many Americans and I was one of them. It brought the reality of foreign terrorism to our homeland and it forever changed the way I think about our security as a nation and as an individual. Thanks for sharing what you learned.

Beth- thank you.  When I think of that day, I have to force myself not to dwell on anything but the positive.

BARFF- glad you posted your 9-11 post.  One of my favorites of yours.

Sharon- I do think we take a lot for granted and i hope that we've learned from that day.

Jimmy- All I know is what I read and saw.  I also know that we had some of the hijackers who lived in Delray before that day.

Sharon- we don't know, do we.  When we lived near DC, and went through various types of security for everything, my mind was always wondering ... could something happen.

Nancy- it was a huge wake up day.  I remember the chill that ran up my spine when I first heard, years before that day, of the strong possibility that there would be an attack on our soil.

Sheila- thank you, very much.

Kathy,

Truly, this is a lovely sentiment. The one that struck a chord for me is this one:

3. Like all of our families with our  grumpy Uncle George, crazy Aunt Millie and  “are you sure he’s part of our family” cousin Harry….. in the end, when times and circumstances call for it, we come together as a family and from that strength we stand against all forces

What I remember the most about the night of 9-11 (I was in class at the University of Dallas) a student who never spoke in class because she was from a foreign country said, "Americans have lost the freedom they were born to know." I didn't know what she was talking about then but I soon came to understand how we changed.
