Easy summer entertaining ideas

With the warm weather upon us, many people like to venture outside to celebrate birthdays, graduations, holidays and any other type of event that brings family and friends together for food and drink. Whatever type of party you have planned this summer, here are some simple suggestions to make the night memorable for guests - and stress-free for the host:

  • Instead of the typical dinner party, why not throw a tiki, mojito or sangria party? For decor, string colored lanterns around the trees or patio, serve food on brightly colored plates - like orange and yellow, use tropical fruit as centerpieces, and greet guests with leis when they walk in.
  • When planning a large gathering, estimate 70 percent to 80 percent of invited guests will show. Invite guests three weeks prior.
  • For food and alcohol consumption, estimate three drinks and four to five appetizers per guest.
  • For an inexpensive centerpiece that goes with most events, wrap a shoebox in white paper and place either fruit or seasonal flowers inside. For flowers, use green foam available at most craft stores to hold the flowers in place.
  • If the event is a bit more formal, use different-shaped mirrors on the table with simple glass votive candles placed on top.
  • Out of votives? Cupcake foils can be used as disposable votives.
  • Serve chilled summer soups or appetizers in martini glasses.
  • Don't be afraid to bring the glass outdoors. Wine, mixed drinks and beer are meant to be served in style. Consider buying a set of glassware specifically for outdoor use.
  • Don't worry if you don't have enough matching plates and platters. Borrow, buy seasonal items, which are pretty inexpensive, or mix and match what you have. Combining different colors and shapes is a chic way
    to serve.

For a simple yet chic dessert, offer guests a sampling of sorbet and fruit served in mini martini glasses. Or, try serving ice cream in a colored ice cream cone-shaped dish instead of a bowl.
