Did you know that the South Florida Science Museum Offers Homeschool Classes And Activities For Wellington Florida Homeschoolers?

You can either drop your kids off for the sessions which last for 2 hours or you can stay and learn something too! It has been a while since I was in a science class and even though I remember most all of the basics there is always something else to learn even in a K to 2 class.

The sessions are divided up for  K-2 Workshops and 3-5 Workshops. These are hands-on workshops that provide a lot of the tools you may not have at home in your home school. The savings of the cost for you not to have to go out and buy the materials is well worth registering your kids for these workshops. They take place once a month during the regular school calendar.

The spring semester started in January and runs through May. You can sign up any time. We decided to become members of the South Florida Science Museum because then we get a deep discount for these workshops and we can bring our son to the Planetarium, the Miniature Golf course outside and exploring lots of hands on exhibits.

There is a small aquarium area with oceanic and freshwater life from around the world. Out where the miniature golf area is kids can explore Florida's flora and fauna along a science trail. The Egyptian exhibit is really cool; you can even learn to write your name in ancient writing. There are lots of hands on fun activities like moving robots, games and challenges. Right now there is also a Bat exhibit. It is really loads of fun and lots of learning.

One of the sessions that took place for the fall semester were learning all about the body inside and out. The teacher had this huge human size cloth doll that had all the internal organs. The kids were quite grossed out when they saw how long their intestines are. My son's favorite workshop last semester was on magnets. He absolutely loves magnets.

Another really exciting class last fall was learning about the Squid. Our son at the age of 5 was taught how to dissect his own squid and learned all about the different parts to a squid. A squid has a beak! I did not know that! How many 5 year olds in public school get to already be learning biology with such a hands-on approach!

In the photos below you can see the ink sack that the squid has. There is this quill like piece of soft bone inside the squid. The kids took this piece out and dipped it in the ink sack and then wrote their names with the ink. A long time ago people used this ink and this piece as a pen and then they would dry out the layers of the squid and use that as paper and write. This was something I never knew before!

This past January his workshop was on Fins and Fossils. The teacher for this class was a professional shark swimmer. He brought the kids shark teeth and they made their own shark tooth necklaces. In February he learned all about state of matter; liquid, solid and gas. I learned a lot in this workshop too. They did some very cool experiments with dry ice!

Next week it is a workshop on Bubbles, that should be a very attractive workshop for kids this age. This spring they will finish off the school year with exploring the wonderful everglades and learning about crystals and minerals.

Lizette- We learned a lot in that class, both the kids and the parents. They have wonderful teachers that come in and teach too. My son just loves science. He says he wants to be a scientist and an inventor and an artist! Katerina
