The Sandhill Crane Family - Always Together

The Sandhill Crane Family - Always Together

Sandhill Cranes are everywhere in our neighborhood; I just love the way the mom and pop stay together for life. What’s even more fun to watch is how they nurture their young. They usually have two babies but most don’t survive the first few weeks. If we have torrential rains, they become victims of pneumonia: or get eaten by crows or hawks.

Sandhill Crane Family

It’s sad to see these little ones chasing after the parents, and then a few days later Mom and Dad wander by without them. The adults honk and cry for days after the death of a youngster. If the babies do make it through to adulthood, they try to hang with the parents but Mom and Dad fly off and leave them their territory.

This little one didn't make it.

Very sad about the little ones.  Funny how Mother Nature operates when it comes to the young.  Humans can take a lesson from the parents about staying together though.

Good Morning Toni, what a cute picture! We have  a family of three on our property, they don't even move when we pull up with our cars or start mowing.

Toni, it would be fun to watch the family grow and play together, but sad to see the babies not make it.

Toni, we have many sandhill cranes in our area - at least seasonally.  It's a heart-warming sight to catch a glimpse of the family together.  They are more tolerant of humans than many other birds are.  I hope that doesn't work to their detriment.

How sad.  This little one didnt make it?  That just breaks my heart.  It is nice to see when some species mate for life.

Toni, I agree with you about that being kinda of tough deal with know some or all the young won't make it. I've only had one Sandhill crane walk around my back yard in Illinois...never saw any youngsters though
