Green Awareness===Let's GO GREEN! Who's Coming With Me?

People assume that the world is what it is and there is nothing we can do about it. Well, I'm here to tell you there IS something we can do about it. Just imagine if everyone took baby steps to going green? Can you imagine how things would change? No, I'm not asking you to go out and buy a hybrid. It's the little things, you know? The little things that you can do can have a huge impact on you, your family, your friends, your state, your country....holy moly and the world!

And it starts with you! Not next week, not tomorrow, not later on today...right this second you can make a difference. Stand up and raise your hand and scream to the world "I'm GOING GREEN, and who's coming with me? Okay, if you are at work I wouldn't suggest that but you get my point! So, what can YOU do to go green? I'm glad you asked. It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the things you can do to help our little friend, the earth. You don't have to do it all at once. Take baby steps. Do it one at a time, progress slowly. Pretty soon you will have a green smile and the world will be a little more greener because of you.

YOUR CAR

Did you know that for every gallon of gas your car consumes it contributes about 18 lbs of CO2 into our atmosphere? If you drive 1,000 miles a month it produces 120 tons of Carbon Dioxide a year. Whoa, that's a lot of pollution. So, what can YOU do about it?

Engines Off- Engines Off is a community started by a mom concerned about engines running at car pool. She grouped together with a bunch of moms and convinced others to turn their engines off while waiting for their child to get out of school. You can do the same. Don't sit in your car with the engine on. Help the world, go green and turn that sucker off!

Eco-Friendly Car- Yes, go turn in your Hummer and get yourself a eco-friendly car. There are a number of cars that are eco-friendly. Be sure to check them out!

Carpool- I remember back in the day, carpooling seemed like the cool thing to do. All of us kids would jump in Ms. Stacy's car to go to school. Well, it's STILL the cool thing to do. Group together with eco-friendly friends and make a carpool schedule and save gas and the earth!

Drive Eco-Friendly- Driving eco-friendly means laying off of the gas and going the speed limit. Try to use cruise control when you can. Try not to load your car up with unnecessary items. The less weight your car has will help it to have better fuel efficiency.

RECYCLE

Did you know that Americans throw away 25 billion coffee cups and 40 billion soft drink cans a year? Did you know that 1 million sea birds, 100,00 marine mammals and 50,00 fur seals are killed a year by being strangled by plastic? That's sad. Did you also know that 84% of household waste can be recycled? Yes! It's time for all of us to join together and RECYCLE!

Recycle Your Newspaper- If you just recycled 1/10 of your newspapers , we would have 25 million trees a year! Now, go hug a tree! Newspapers can be recycled 5-7 times. After they have been recycled so many times they are ready to make good paper.

Recycle Your Aluminum-  It's very important to recycle your aluminum cans. Hey, you might can make some money out of it to! Did you know that once a can is recycled it can be part of a new can in 60 days?

Recycle Your Plastic- Save the earth and the animals by recycling your plastic. Did you know that there is approximately 3 million tons of plastic waste each year? More than half of that is just packaging! Plastic is hard to break down and recycle sometimes. Be creative. Try to find other ways to use your plastic. Keep your water jugs and put them to use!

Recycle Junk Mail-Save paper or just get rid of junk mail all together. There is a website called Greener Dimes that helps you eliminate junk mail. They try to get you off of the junk mail list. For only ten dollars, you can opt against receiving those catalogs you never read. Save a tree and eliminate junk mail!

Recycle Electronics- Did you know electronics contains toxic materials? They have toxic materials like lead, cadmium and mercury. When we throw these away these toxic materials leak into the soil and ground water. Did you know that the average computer monitor has over eight pounds of lead? That's a lot of lead! So, gather those old electronics and get to recycling. Electronic items that can be recycled are: computers, cell phones, your tv and other items. Most of these items can be reused and save the earth. Get on board! toot toot!

Excellent points Lindsay on recycling - there is so much we each can do in our own small spheres. The most earth friendly thing we can do initially is to create less waste to deal with, because it all takes energy to re-use, etc.

Awesome earth friendly post!
